Description
Yuu Ishigami attends Shuchi'in Academy as the student council treasurer. His enrollment stems from being the second son of a small toy company owner, compensating for his lack of top academic standing. He sports chin-length black hair with bangs obscuring the left side of his face, often accompanied by a gloomy expression.
A pivotal middle school event involved classmate Kyoko Ootomo. Discovering her boyfriend, Ko Ogino, was cheating and possessed compromising photos of her, Ishigami intervened. When Ogino attempted a bribe using the photos, Ishigami assaulted him. Ogino then framed the incident as jealous stalking, resulting in widespread rumors, a long-term suspension, and severe social ostracization for Ishigami. Refusing to write a demanded apology letter, he remained isolated at home until student council president Miyuki Shirogane uncovered the truth and secured his return to school. This incident deeply scarred his self-esteem, leading to social withdrawal, academic difficulties, and a cynical outlook.
As treasurer, Ishigami initially avoided meetings, preferring solitary work. He dedicates significant time to video games, manga, and anime-related media, though he conceals these interests to dodge the otaku label. Despite his aloof demeanor, he possesses sharp observational and analytical skills, frequently detecting hidden insecurities or resolving interpersonal issues for others, occasionally causing unintended conflict. A strong, covert sense of justice drives actions like anonymously supporting discipline committee member Miko Iino during her middle school bullying by sending encouraging letters and flowers.
Ishigami's growth starts when pressured to join club activities; he reluctantly joins the cheer squad. Though uncomfortable around popular peers, he gradually connects, culminating in a sports festival relay where he earns acceptance despite losing the race. An accidental heart-shaped gift to third-year Tsubame Koyasu at a cultural festival is misinterpreted as a confession. After several dates, she rejects him romantically, resulting in heartbreak, though he later acknowledges developing feelings for Iino.
His dynamic with Iino shifts from antagonism—fueled by her strict rule enforcement clashing with his rule-breaking—to mutual care. Beyond his past anonymous support, he assists her during elections and checks on her at events. After Iino breaks her arm saving him, he dotes on her out of guilt, fostering increased closeness. By their third year, both recognize romantic feelings, and Ishigami serves as vice president under Iino’s presidency. Academically, he dramatically improves, rising from 197th to 8th in his class.
Other connections include editing fanfiction for classmate Karen Kino while maintaining a business-like relationship and forming a friendship with Maki Shijo over shared romantic frustrations. His long bangs symbolize a fear of others' perceptions, a barrier gradually lowered through his interactions and personal development.
