Description
Keiichiro Akizuki, a high-ranking samurai serving the Tokugawa bakufu in the late Edo period, balances rigid loyalty to his clan with a pragmatic view of modernization. A disciplined retainer, he aids Touma Kusaka—an adversary from the Chōshū clan—during a political clash, facilitating his escape and later covertly instructing him in English. This alliance defies his faction’s isolationist principles, revealing Akizuki’s quiet advocacy for foreign engagement.

Their bond deepens into a secret romance, forged through intellectual exchange and shared vulnerability. Akizuki’s devotion to Kusaka clashes with his duty as the Boshin War erupts, pitting their factions against each other. Leading bakufu forces, he suffers grave injuries, losing his left leg in battle. His attempted seppuku is thwarted by Kusaka, who intervenes violently to protect him.

Postwar, Akizuki hides under Kusaka’s guardianship, tormented by survivor’s guilt and the plight of his comrades. His adherence to samurai honor strains their relationship, worsened by Aizawa—a former ally now enforcing imperial law—who demands his ritual suicide. Though briefly reconciling, Akizuki ultimately chooses death in a snowfield, wielding a tantō from Aizawa. His final note and a preserved cicada shell, emblematic of his bond with Kusaka, precede the latter’s own suicide.

Akizuki’s arc traces the transformation from steadfast samurai to a man fractured by competing loyalties, love, and societal collapse. His amputated leg and psychological scars mirror the era’s turmoil, encapsulating themes of honor, sacrifice, and the inescapable decay of tradition amid upheaval.
