Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is a Japanese youth transformed into a cyborg after being kidnapped by the Black Ghost organization. Abandoned as an infant on church steps following his mother's death and raised by the church priest, his early life involved hardship, including prejudice due to his mixed Japanese-American heritage and bonds formed with fellow orphans. This ended tragically when Black Ghost killed the priest and framed Joe for the murder. Forced to flee, he was captured by Black Ghost agents and subjected to cybernetic augmentation, becoming the final model in their 00-series cyborg soldier program.
Following his transformation and escape with fellow cyborgs aided by Dr. Gilmore, Joe emerged as the team's leader. His cybernetic enhancements grant superhuman strength, durability, and agility. His signature ability is Acceleration Mode, activated by a switch in his molar, enabling supersonic speeds where surrounding objects appear frozen. This ability carries significant limitations: air friction generates extreme heat, making physical contact dangerous during activation, and prolonged use causes severe fatigue. His enhancements also include mechanical lungs for underwater respiration and poison gas filtration.
In *Legend of the Super Galaxy*, set after Black Ghost's defeat, Joe initially lives a civilian life under the alias "Hurricane Joe" as a Formula 1 racer. He is reluctantly called back to action when Dr. Gilmore and Dr. Cosmo warn of an impending cosmic threat. The cyborgs learn of the alien conqueror Zoa from Saba, a young survivor from the planet Komadar. During their mission, Joe encounters Princess Tamara on a ravaged planet, rescuing her from captivity. This leads to a brief romantic connection highlighting his capacity for empathy and emotional vulnerability, underscoring his desire for normal human connection despite his cybernetic nature. However, the cyborgs prove unable to protect Tamara's planet from Zoa's subsequent assault, forcing a retreat. Joe's journey culminates in a cosmic confrontation within the Vortex, an energy source sought by Zoa, where he experiences a profound revelation about the universe's nature.
Joe consistently exhibits a compassionate and idealistic personality, driven by a strong sense of justice. He possesses a self-sacrificing nature, often prioritizing others' safety above his own well-being. Stemming from childhood losses, this manifests as a "hero complex" where he shoulders others' burdens. While committed to protecting humanity, he maintains a belief in redemption, often attempting to appeal to enemies' morality. His leadership is central to the team, though his intense focus on mission objectives or relieving suffering can sometimes cause him to overlook teammates' emotional needs. He harbors deep-seated animosity towards Black Ghost but remains capable of distinguishing between enemies and innocents, intervening to save even adversaries when necessary.
