Description
Albert Heinrich, designated Cyborg 004, originated in 1930s Germany. His background encompasses surviving World War II and the subsequent division of Germany, which placed him in East Berlin. He attempted an escape to West Berlin with his fiancée Hilda using forged identification documents. Their plan failed when border guards detected the fake ID and opened fire on their vehicle, resulting in Hilda's death and leaving Albert critically injured. Black Ghost operatives, posing as medical aid, abducted him from the crash site and transported him to their facility for cyborg conversion.
Due to the severity of his injuries and near-fatal condition during surgery, Black Ghost replaced most of his organic body parts with advanced weaponry and machinery. His right hand became an integrated machine gun, his left hand concealed an electromagnetic cutting knife, and his legs housed missile launchers. This extensive cybernization made him the most mechanically augmented of the 00 Cyborgs, leaving minimal organic components beyond his brain and nervous system. The transformation caused significant physical pain, compounded by grief over Hilda's death, leading to severe psychological distress and suicidal tendencies. These issues contributed to Black Ghost suspending the initial cyborg program and placing Albert and three other early cyborgs in cryogenic stasis for approximately forty years until technological advancements could address their instabilities.
After awakening from stasis and joining the expanded team of nine cyborgs, Albert developed a complex personality marked by cynicism and philosophical reflection stemming from his traumatic experiences. His worldview often involves musings on human nature and global conflicts, reflecting his chronological age of over 70 years despite a physically younger appearance. He maintains a reserved and strategic demeanor during missions, prioritizing calculated actions over impulsiveness. However, witnessing injustice or threats to his teammates can trigger intense rage, making him a formidable combatant due to his weaponized body.
Within the 00 Cyborg team, Albert functions as an older brother figure, offering guidance and emotional support, particularly to younger members like Joe Shimamura (009) and Françoise Arnoul (003). His relationship with Jet Link (002) is notably contentious due to clashing personalities—Albert's stoicism conflicting with Jet's impulsiveness—yet they share mutual respect and unwavering loyalty in crises. Albert harbors deep suspicion toward anyone associated with Black Ghost, demonstrated when he initially distrusted Vena due to her connections to the organization. Her eventual betrayal of Black Ghost earned his trust, making her subsequent death a profound personal loss.
In the context of "Cyborg 009: The Legend of the Super Galaxy," Albert participates in the cyborg team's mission against the intergalactic threat Zoa. This involves traveling through space aboard an alien vessel to confront Zoa's forces and protect planetary civilizations. During these events, the team briefly encounters Princess Tamara on a ravaged planet. Albert's specific role in this storyline remains consistent with his established traits as a strategic combatant and team supporter, without receiving individualized focus. Enhanced abilities from other continuities, such as energy-projectile attacks, are not featured in this narrative.
Albert's core struggle revolves around his identity as a heavily mechanized being. He expresses explicit disdain for his mechanical nature, lamenting the loss of his humanity while simultaneously wielding his enhancements to protect others. This internal conflict underscores his interactions, particularly when comforting teammates facing similar existential doubts. His journey reflects a gradual acceptance of his role within the found family of the 00 Cyborgs, which provides stability against his traumatic past and the ongoing fight against global threats.
