Description
Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, traces his origins to Africa, with his specific homeland shifting across adaptations. Early sources ambiguously cited "Africa" as his birthplace, while the 1992 manga conclusively established Kenya. Supplemental materials for the 1968 and 1979 adaptations also specified Kenya, though other versions placed him in locations like the fictional Muamba Republic or Côte d’Ivoire. The OVA *009 vs. Devilman* later reaffirmed Kenya as his homeland.

Before his abduction by the Black Ghost organization, Pyunma fought as a guerrilla rebel against Muamba's dictator, Unbaba. Separated from his comrade Mamado during a nighttime skirmish, he was captured and forcibly transformed into an aquatic specialist cyborg within the 00-series. His enhancements granted extraordinary underwater speed, mobility, and submersed breathing. His pre-cyborg combat experience made him the sole team member with formal military training.

A critical mission targeting Black Ghost operations in Muamba delivered a devastating blow: Pyunma reunited with former allies only to discover Mamado—missing since their separation—had been converted into a brainwashed cyborg operative named Number One. Despite Pyunma’s desperate pleas, Mamado remained enslaved to Black Ghost’s control, compelling Pyunma to kill his friend to halt further destruction.

Severely injured battling a cybernetically augmented animal, Pyunma underwent radical physical reconstruction by Dr. Gilmore. His new body integrated fish-like scales to maximize aquatic prowess. Initially resisting the modification over fears of losing his humanity, Pyunma ultimately accepted it as essential for his combat effectiveness.

In the film *Cyborg 009 Gekijō Ban: Chō Ginga Densetsu* (1980), Pyunma lived independently after Black Ghost’s apparent defeat, rejoining the team to counter the intergalactic threat of Zoa. While his individual actions against Zoa remain undocumented, he participated in the collective defense of Earth.

Across all narratives, Pyunma’s arc confronts sacrifice, loss, and adaptation. He grapples with Black Ghost’s ruinous impact on his relationships and accepts physical alterations that amplify his combat role while straining his human identity. His background consistently roots him in anti-colonial resistance and unyielding opposition to oppression.
