Description
Originating from Iwagakure, Gabimaru was raised from infancy as a shinobi subjected to brutal conditioning designed to purge emotions and sentimentality. Trained to kill without hesitation, his apathetic demeanor and ruthless efficiency in assassination earned him the moniker "Gabimaru the Hollow." His path as the village's weapon was cemented after witnessing the village chief execute his parents following their failed escape attempt.

His existence remained detached, focused solely on mission objectives, until meeting and marrying Yui. Her influence gradually awakened dormant emotions within him, conflicting with his conditioning. This awakening birthed a desire for a peaceful life with her, leading him to abandon his shinobi role. This decision resulted in betrayal; the village chief handed him over for execution. Multiple execution attempts failed due to his superhuman physical resilience, though he initially displayed resignation.

During imprisonment, he realized his desire to survive stemmed from love for Yui and determination to return to her. This motivated him to accept an offer from Yamada Asaemon Sagiri: retrieve the Elixir of Life from the mythical island of Shinsenkyo in exchange for a full pardon. He agreed, viewing this perilous mission as the sole path to reunite with his wife.

Physically, Gabimaru appears as a young man of below-average height with untamed white hair often covering the right side of his face, red eyes (yellow in the anime), and a muscular build bearing shinobi-life scars. His standard attire consists of a black or dark blue-gray Iwagakure robe with frayed sleeves, matching tattsuke bakama, a white sash belt, black ninja sleeves with finger rings, and straw sandals with tabi socks and gaiters. After exposure to Tao energies on Shinsenkyo, his body temporarily manifested ghastly alterations: peony flowers sprouted in his hair and dark markings spread across his left eye. These receded to faint pink petals and a branch-like marking after stabilizing his Tao, eventually disappearing entirely post-redemption.

His personality undergoes significant evolution on Shinsenkyo. Initially, he maintains a detached, stoic composure even in danger, prioritizing his goal above all else and avoiding unnecessary interactions, frequently complaining about inconveniences. Underlying this is a conflict between ingrained shinobi instincts—viewing life as expendable and missions as paramount—and Yui's teachings about true strength lying in embracing emotions. When threatened, he reverts to a murderous state focused solely on eliminating obstacles. However, exposure to allies like Sagiri and the kunoichi Mei challenges his worldview. He begins displaying subconscious protective instincts, such as saving Sagiri from a Sōshin or shielding Mei from a Dōshi, motivated by an inability to tolerate their distress and a sense of debt. He expresses genuine anger when others dehumanize Mei.

His resolve to see Mei's wish fulfilled—to meet her creators—marks a commitment beyond self-interest. He learns gratitude, thanking allies like Yuzuriha's team and acknowledging Sagiri's role in helping him find his resolve. Confronting the Tensen Rien, he empathizes with her loss, refusing to destroy her husband's remains due to his own understanding of profound love. This act of compassion signifies his complete rejection of Iwagakure's teachings. By the mission's conclusion, he fully embraces his emotions, smiling and laughing genuinely. Post-mission, he reunites with Yui. One year later, he lives peacefully with her, his hair slightly regrown to its original volume, symbolizing his transition into a new life.

Despite social awkwardness and occasional bluntness misinterpreted as obnoxiousness, he demonstrates consideration, advising both Yui and Mei not to hide facial scars and expressing that appearances are unimportant. He remains fiercely loyal to Yui, immune to seduction attempts. His inability to lie effectively is noted by allies. These traits persist alongside his core determination to survive and return home, even as his methods shift from solitary pragmatism to collaborative resilience.
