Description
Hoichi, a blind biwa hōshi minstrel, resided at Amidaji Temple near Akamagaseki's historic Battle of Dan-no-ura site. He mastered "The Tale of the Heike," his recitations of the Heike clan's defeat and Emperor Antoku's drowning famed for their emotional power, said to move supernatural beings to tears. Though impoverished, the temple priest offered him shelter in exchange for performances.

One summer night, alone at the temple, Hoichi encountered a stern samurai commanding him to perform for an incognito lord. Bound by obligation and blindness, Hoichi followed the retainer to an apparent aristocratic estate filled with courtiers. Passionately performing the Battle of Dan-no-ura segment, he elicited profound weeping. The samurai ordered his return for six nights under secrecy.

After repeated nocturnal absences, the suspicious priest sent servants who found Hoichi performing before Emperor Antoku's tomb in the Amidaji cemetery, surrounded by spectral oni-bi flames. His audience was the ghosts of the Heike clan, perished centuries prior at Dan-no-ura. The priest realized these spirits sought to claim Hoichi permanently for his moving recitations of their demise.

To protect him, the priest and assistant inscribed Hoichi's entire body—except his ears—with sacred Heart Sutra characters, rendering him invisible to spirits. Hoichi was instructed to stay silent and motionless when the ghosts returned. That night, the samurai spirit perceived only Hoichi's unpainted ears, ripping them off as proof for his lord. Hoichi endured the mutilation without outcry, adhering to the priest's warning.

The priest later acknowledged neglecting Hoichi's ears but confirmed the sutras broke the ghosts' hold. Hoichi survived, thereafter known as "Mimi-nashi Hōichi" (Hoichi the Earless). Freed from supernatural torment, he achieved widespread fame performing for living patrons across Japan.

Variants exist, such as Tokushima Prefecture's "Mimikiri Dan'ichi" featuring protagonist Dan'ichi, while maintaining the core narrative: a blind biwa player encountering Heike spirits, receiving protective bodily inscription, and losing ears due to incomplete sutra application.
