Description
Born August 15, 2000, Hana Asakura is the son of Yoh Asakura and Anna Kyoyama. As an infant, he and his parents were killed in the Middle East, their souls entering the Great Spirit. Anna compelled the Shaman King Hao to revive them, during which Hao implanted onis into Hana as a safeguard. This created a defense mechanism: when Hana's life was threatened, the onis manifested as destructive beasts reflecting his inner darkness. In these trances, known as "Setsubun Mode," he would chant "Demons out," attacking indiscriminately with heightened aggression and mockery. Conscious use of this power risked his life.
Raised under Tamao Tamamura's guardianship at Funbari Onsen, Hana initially believed her to be his mother. As a child, he witnessed the destruction of the Patch Village by Kamogawa Yohsuke and YVS members. Hana attacked Yohsuke, who froze time using a YVS Card. Hana regained consciousness and killed Yohsuke, though YVS operatives later erased his memories of the event. By age six, he worked with Ryunosuke Umemiya to search for the Five Elemental Warriors. Upon Yoh and Anna's return, Hana greeted his father with a signature "welcome kick" to the stomach, refusing to apologize.
In his early teens, Hana harbored pent-up anger and feelings of isolation stemming from his parents' prolonged absence and Tamao's strict prohibition against using his shamanic powers. He frequently engaged in street fights with delinquents like Ichihara Ryuji's gang, viewing them as an outlet for his frustration. Socially awkward and arrogant, he mocked others' appearances and motives, ridiculing his relative Yohane Asakura for his attire and initially mistaking Yohane's sister Luca for a secret admirer. He maintained a disrespectful attitude toward spirits and people, often greeting others with violence, including Hao himself.
Hana inherited his father's guardian spirit, Amidamaru, and wielded the Asakura family's Futunomitama no Turugi, a sword-shaped rock used to create sword-type Over Souls. His primary Over Soul, "Oni Kabuto," featured defensive (a demonic helmet for absorption) and offensive (an armguard with a cleaver-like blade) forms. By age seven, he could form an Over Soul. Amidamaru noted Hana possessed greater potential than Yoh at the same age, both physically and mentally. However, Hana heavily relied on Amidamaru during fights, creating vulnerabilities when separated. After Amidamaru's capture, Sakurai Sakutaro, a World War II pilot spirit, became his temporary guardian.
Hana's primary motivation became defeating his father, Yoh, leading him to participate in the "Flower of Maize," a shamanic battle affecting the world. During this conflict, he faced Tao Men and overused his Daidarabotchi power, resulting in his death. Hao sent Hana's spirit to Hell for training, where his spiritual strength increased dramatically. Upon returning, he could instantly recover from injuries in spirit form. He was temporarily used by Alumi Numbirch for Soul Integration, enabling her to perform Amidamaru's "Shinku Buddagiri" technique. Sati Saigan later revived him, reuniting his spirit with his body.
After Hell training, Hana learned to summon copies of spirits like Amidamaru, Sakutaro, and Johann Faust VIII using the Cloud technique. He developed furyoku-nullification abilities with small onis and tested New Trance by fusing with his own spirit. Witnessing Sakutaro's death in a dogfight and reflecting on others' motivations prompted introspection. He recognized the importance of protecting loved ones, signaling a shift from his earlier blood knight tendencies. Despite retaining his brashness, he displayed moments of compassion, defending Alumi as a child and attempting first aid on Yohane after defeating him.
Hana's name combines "Ha" from Yoh's name (葉) and "Na" from Anna's name (ナ), meaning "flower." His character reflects traits from both parents: Anna's temper and violent tendencies, including her "Legendary Left" reimagined as his "welcome kick," and Yoh's cynicism toward humanity, though without Yoh's affability. He tended plants on his veranda, a hobby taught by Redseb.
