Description
Tae Yamada, designated Zombie 0 in Franchouchou, possesses a complex history spanning multiple eras. In her human life, she worked part-time at her father's food stand, Karatsu Burgers, while secretly leading the Saga Sagako Busters, a group combating supernatural curses plaguing Saga Prefecture. As their leader, she exhibited a stern, stoic demeanor, fought using physical strength and a shovel, and relied on allies for curse-sealing abilities. Her childhood isolation followed her parents' deaths during a Sagako-related incident, fueling her lifelong quest for vengeance. She formed significant bonds, particularly with Yuko Hyodo, whose positive influence softened her hardened outlook. Tae ultimately sacrificed herself to seal the powerful spider Sagako Magatsuhi, fusing with the entity and dying at approximately 19 years old.
Resurrected as a zombie, Tae displays distinct characteristics. She initially exhibits entirely mindless, instinct-driven behavior, frequently gnawing on objects or people, with a particular affinity for Junko Konno. Bandages cover her neck, chest, head, and upper leg. She wears a loose black dress, gray knee-high socks, and black flats. Her long, straight, dark prune hair often features two slightly protruding sections and straight bangs, sometimes resembling a squid – coinciding with her fondness for the food. Her eyes remain reddish-brown without contact lenses. Her idol attire includes a long-sleeved purple striped shirt with a violet skirt featuring white frills in earlier performances, later changing to a red jacket with plaid decoration, a purple skirt, and knee-high boots.
Tae remains the only Franchouchou member who does not fully regain human consciousness or speech capabilities, communicating primarily through groans, gestures, and physical actions. Despite this, she demonstrates gradual cognitive development. She comprehends basic instructions, allowing participation in group practices and performances. She exhibits moments of protectiveness, biting Maria Amabuki's hair bun when she threatens Sakura Minamoto and Lily Hoshikawa, or scaring off a boar attacking the group. She shows curiosity, imitating other members' movements, expressions, and occasionally attempting words like Sakura's "One, two" count-in. Her extreme appetite leads to consuming raw meat, plates, eel sticks, and mistaking costumed individuals for real food.
Her development continues across official media. While largely instinctual in the main series, she performs coordinated dance moves by imitation and shows situational awareness, understanding the need to hide her zombie identity during public incidents. The dedicated spin-off manga, *Zombie Land Saga Gaiden: The First Zombie*, extensively explores her human life, leadership of the Sagako Busters, complex relationship with Yuko's brother Eikichi Hyodo whom she trained, and her sacrificial death. An upcoming film, *Zombie Land Saga: Yumeginga Paradise*, hints at potential developments regarding her regaining humanity. Her cause of death, alongside Yugiri's, was initially unrevealed in the anime's first season but later elaborated in the Gaiden manga. Tae is also credited with naming the group "Franchouchou" through a sneeze. Her journey depicts a gradual, non-linear progression from feral instincts towards emerging sentience and social integration within the group dynamic.
