Sun Lihua is the sister of Sun Quan, ruler of Wu, and becomes embroiled in the political and military strife between the rival states of Shu and Wu. She enters into a strategic marriage alliance with Liu Bei, the founding emperor of Shu, a scheme devised by Wu's military commander Zhou Yu to reclaim Jingzhou Castle from Liu Bei’s forces. When the plan fails and Liu Bei retains control of Jingzhou, Sun Lihua remains with him in Jingzhou instead of returning to her brother’s domain in Wu. This portrayal presents a fictionalized account of these events, diverging from traditional historical and literary narratives found in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
