Description
Romero is an undead canine and the mascot for the idol group Franchouchou. Originally belonging to the Momozaki family in the late 1800s, he was later entrusted to Kotaro Tatsumi for a project to revitalize Saga Prefecture. His resurrection predates the other Franchouchou members, making him the first successfully reanimated being and the only known zombified animal to regain consciousness. Romero died one month after his third birthday, sharing his date of death with Junko Konno.
Physically, Romero resembles a toy poodle with blue fur, visible stitches, bandages, and a Saga Prefecture-shaped bruise on his right side. His right eye is doll-like, and he has long blood-stained fangs. He possesses a detachable body part ability. Romero can transform into a larger, monstrous form featuring a bulging eye and heightened aggressiveness, used to deter threats or prevent outsiders from discovering the zombies' identities.
Despite his undead nature, Romero exhibits loyalty and protective instincts like a normal dog. He forms strong bonds with the Franchouchou members, particularly Sakura Minamoto, whom he accompanies on morning jogs and fiercely defends. He shares a unique friendship with Tae Yamada, assisting her with errands and interacting with locals. Romero displays an extreme omnivorous diet, consuming non-edible items like baseballs and insects; dried squid is his favorite food.
His abilities include enhanced canine senses, immortality, phosphorescent vision, and unexpected skills like swiftly hunting aquatic life. He exhibits higher intellect than typical dogs, understanding complex commands and situations. In his monstrous form, he effectively scares away intruders.
Romero assists in guiding and guarding the zombies, such as preventing escapes from their mansion and alerting the group to Sakura's departure. During crises, like the collapse of Franchouchou's residence, he accompanies the members to a shelter and helps entertain children alongside Tae. His history reveals centuries-long service, including loyalty to Jofuku in the 19th century, where he stayed by his master's side during illness.
His role extends to public activities, appearing in commercials and merchandise without disguising his undead traits, unlike the human zombies who require makeup. Romero serves as a fundamental protector and companion within Franchouchou's operations.
