Description
Tae Shimura, known as Otae, is the older sister of Shimura Shinpachi. Following their father’s death, she assumed guardianship of the family dojo, Koudoukan, and financial responsibility for her brother, despite inheriting crippling debts. To restore the dojo, she works as a cabaret hostess at Snack Smile, where her elegance and sharp wit attract patrons, though her reputation as a bouncer—forged through raw physical power—rivals her charm.
Her demeanor balances poised civility with explosive rage, most frequently directed at Kondou Isao, the Shinsengumi commander whose obsessive infatuation she rebuffs with brutal force. Despite her hostility, Kondou’s loyalty persists, often placing him in harm’s way to shield her. She shares an unbreakable childhood pact with Yagyuu Kyuubei, vowing marriage after Kyuubei sacrificed an eye defending her from debt enforcers.
Otae’s mastery of the Tendoumushin sword style translates seamlessly to naginata combat or bare-handed brawls, her strikes legendary for their destructive force. She effortlessly weaponizes ordinary items, from inflatable hammers to frying pans, and leaves craters with casual swings. Yet her role in pivotal battles oscillates between frontline combatant and observer, with moments where allies must intervene to save her.
Her culinary creations, dubbed “dark matter” fried eggs, induce hallucinations, temporary blindness, or unconsciousness, serving as both accidental poison and deliberate weaponry. A phobia of monsters paradoxically heightens her lethality, as seen when terror drives her to dismantle haunted attractions with frenzied violence.
She eventually rises to become one of Kabuki District’s 4 Devas, a symbol of her authority, though her tenure in this role garners uneven narrative attention. Her dream of reviving Koudoukan reignites during arcs like the Beam Saber conflict, yet sustained momentum for this goal remains elusive.
Within the Yorozuya trio—Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura—she functions as a stabilizing force, though her individual aspirations and relationships beyond this group receive sporadic exploration. While she commands respect as a leader among Snack Smile’s hostesses, broader storylines occasionally overlook the depth of her influence and capabilities.
