Sonoka Torai (or Watarai) possesses thigh-length pink hair, usually in two low braids, and magenta eyes. She wears a standard black and white uniform. On the ground, she is soft-spoken, mild-mannered, polite, and reserved. However, during flight operations, she transforms into a notably reckless and aggressive pilot, displaying heightened combat impulsiveness that sets her apart from her squadron peers, establishing a defining operational contrast.
She served as one of three primary Valkyries at Tateyama Air Base, Japan, confronting the Pillar threatening Mount Fuji. Her relationship with veteran pilot Yayoi Amatsuka fractured after a critical incident: Yayoi deliberately disabled Sonoka's aircraft during a mission to protect her. This resulted in the loss of Yayoi's entire squadron while Sonoka remained grounded, leaving lasting resentment until later circumstances forced their reconciliation.
Sonoka pilots the magically enhanced Macchi M.C.72R, a variant of the historical seaplane racer. It retains the original's twin-float configuration and contra-rotating propellers but possesses supernatural modifications enabling combat against Pillars. Its performance significantly exceeds the original's 709 km/h speed record.
A pivotal change occurred during the assault on the Fuji Pillar. After the failed offensive and Yayoi's death during rescue, trauma rendered Sonoka unfit for flight duties. Her resolve reignited during an emergency: a Pillar attacked Tateyama Base simultaneously with a civilian childbirth. Recognizing Yayoi's underlying desire for her continued service and embracing the imperative to protect life, Sonoka recommitted to combat. This renewed determination enabled her to destroy the attacking Pillar, symbolizing personal redemption and operational reinstatement. She continues her duties with her squadron, including formally integrating new Valkyrie recruits.
