Description
Jiang Gan, a scholar and debater hailing from Jiujiang Commandery, earns renown across the Jiangnan and Huai River regions for his eloquence and persuasive prowess. As tensions escalate before the Battle of Red Cliffs, Cao Cao dispatches him to sway Sun Quan’s general Zhou Yu into defection. Concealing his mission beneath humble attire and discreet travel, Jiang Gan approaches Zhou Yu under the pretense of rekindling their old camaraderie.

Though Zhou Yu discerns Jiang Gan’s covert agenda, he receives him with courtesy, swiftly challenging his allegiance to Cao Cao. Throughout their exchanges, Zhou Yu parades his military might, abundant granaries, and well-stocked armories—a display of steadfast loyalty to Sun Quan laced with veiled jabs at Jiang Gan’s persuasive endeavors. Failing to sway Zhou Yu, Jiang Gan withdraws, later commending the general’s integrity to Cao Cao while conceding the futility of further recruitment attempts.

A dramatized retelling expands Jiang Gan’s role: he volunteers for a second mission to infiltrate Zhou Yu’s camp. There, he intercepts a fabricated letter crafted by Zhou Yu, falsely accusing Cao Cao’s naval commanders Cai Mao and Zhang Yun of defection. Jiang Gan delivers the counterfeit evidence to Cao Cao, triggering their executions and crippling his naval strength.

Later, Jiang Gan encounters Pang Tong—Zhou Yu’s covert ally—near the military camp. Mistaking him for an independent strategist, he introduces Pang Tong to Cao Cao. The strategist advises linking warships with iron chains to stabilize them, a tactic that later enables their destruction by fire during the Battle of Red Cliffs. These unwitting actions render Jiang Gan an inadvertent contributor to Cao Cao’s strategic vulnerabilities.

Historical accounts diverge sharply, documenting only Jiang Gan’s unsuccessful persuasion attempt and subsequent praise for Zhou Yu’s loyalty, devoid of espionage intrigues or Pang Tong’s involvement. The embellished narrative magnifies his naivete and cements his unintended impact on the conflict’s trajectory.
