Description
Kōtarō Takahashi begins his journey as a disengaged cub reporter reluctantly tasked with covering the Komada Whisky Distillery. His indifference toward both journalism and whisky fuels repeated errors—mishandling industry terms and neglecting research—that strain relations with the distillery team. Actively evading responsibilities, his apathy mirrors unresolved regrets over abandoning his musical ambitions after leaving a band he deemed destined to fail.

A clash with Rui Komada, the distillery’s driven president, ignites when he dismissively claims she inherited her role without hardship. Her sharp rebuke and a subsequent revelation by a colleague unravel Rui’s past: sacrificing her own artistic goals to salvage the family business following her brother’s departure and her father’s sudden death. This sparks a transformative empathy in Kōtarō, redirecting his approach to his work.

He delves into whisky craftsmanship, mastering blending techniques and cask-aging intricacies. His articles pivot to spotlight the distillery’s personal narratives, rallying local support. A misstep—publishing unverified allegations against a competitor—forces him to publicly atone, cementing his newfound accountability. His revitalized reporting later proves instrumental in recovering rare whisky reserves and unearthing archival records crucial to reviving the distillery’s forgotten flagship blend.

By the story’s end, Kōtarō emerges as a reflective journalist mentoring peers, openly addressing his earlier failures while championing the value of human-centric storytelling. His evolution underscores a broader reckoning: purpose emerges through shared struggles, and narratives can forge bonds that sustain communities.
