Kyōshirō Shuragami, born Ikegami Souichirou, served as a samurai for the Shounai Domain. Six years before the main events, his father acted as an envoy in a secret negotiation, agreeing to cede the Enzo region to Prussia in exchange for military aid against the new Japanese government. Upon learning of the Shounai and Aizu clans' surrender, Buhei Hiramatsu (John Henry Schnell) slaughtered Ikegami and his servants to conceal the agreement. Hiramatsu gravely wounded Souichirou, costing him an eye before he fell overboard. Rescued from this attack, Souichirou later adopted the name Kyōshirō Shuragami and forged a crew including the archer Dario, the elderly Genshō, and the masked enforcer Guen. His driving purpose became vengeance against Hiramatsu. To infiltrate Hiramatsu's criminal empire, Shuragami joined the Moriya yakuza clan. He proved his lethal skill by eliminating the rival Douyama clan to gain their trust. Within the Moriya, he carried out missions involving opium trafficking and other illicit activities directed by Hiramatsu, who secretly controlled both the Moriya and Fujishima clans while plotting to overthrow the government and restore samurai rule. Shuragami is marked by his silver hair, an eye patch covering his wounded left eye, and exceptional swordsmanship. He operates outside the law, employing ruthless tactics like ambushes and violence to achieve his ends. His actions are fueled by profound rage and a thirst for revenge, often leading to impulsive choices. Despite his criminal associations, he demonstrates fierce loyalty to his small crew and develops a complex rivalry with Shizuma Origasa, a former samurai now a policeman. Their confrontations stem from opposing ideals—Shuragami's relentless vengeance versus Origasa's commitment to justice. His quest culminates aboard Hiramatsu’s ship. Shuragami confronts and defeats Hiramatsu, humiliating him by severing his traditional samurai hairstyle. However, during a subsequent duel with Origasa, Hiramatsu shoots Shuragami. He dies in Origasa’s arms as flames engulf the vessel.
