Description
Shunpei Chihaya is a first-year student at Kotesashi High School and the second baseman for the school's baseball team. He possesses short red hair, red eyes, and wears red-framed glasses purely as a fashion accessory. Standing 167 cm tall, his physique is smaller than average for baseball players. His distinct style includes wearing his school blazer over a sweater with his necktie displayed outside and rolling up his pants cuffs to showcase his socks, reflecting his interest in fashion trends.

Inspired by professional players on television, Shunpei began playing baseball in childhood. Recognizing his smaller stature as a disadvantage early on, he compensated through intense technical training, studying baseball theory, and honing precise bat control. Though he became the best player on his junior league team, his confidence collapsed after facing the dominant battery of Haruka Kiyomine and Kei Kaname. Their combination of natural talent and skill made Shunpei feel his efforts were meaningless, culminating in him enviously telling a physically gifted teammate, "I wish I had that"—a phrase he despised. This defeat and resulting self-disillusionment led him to quit baseball.

After quitting, he struggled to find purpose, dabbling unsuccessfully in music, tea ceremony, academics, and fashion. He deliberately chose Kotesashi High for its lack of a baseball club to distance himself from his past. However, encountering Haruka and Kei at the school reignited his passion for the sport, prompting him to join the newly formed baseball team.

On the field, Shunpei specializes in contact hitting, rarely striking out. He excels at fouling off pitches, bunting, and leveraging his speed for base stealing and disruptive baserunning. His agility and strategic approach make him the team's leadoff hitter. At the coach's suggestion, he works to develop power-hitting capabilities, accepting temporary performance dips for long-term growth. Defensively, as second baseman, he forms a double-play partnership with shortstop Aoi Todo. They initially clash due to Shunpei's analytical style versus Aoi's emotional drive, but develop effective coordination through practice.

Shunpei often acts as a team strategist, particularly when Kei Kaname experiences memory loss. His logical mindset and baseball intellect help fill tactical gaps during games. His relationship with pitcher Haruka Kiyomine evolves from one-sided recognition to mutual respect, especially after Shunpei offers encouragement following a tough loss. Off the field, he maintains academic excellence, scoring above 90 in all subjects. His interests include collecting audio gear, listening to electronic music, and acquiring unique socks, often shopping in women's sections for distinctive designs.

His character development focuses on overcoming isolationist tendencies. Initially believing individual effort could surmount physical limitations, he learns to trust teammates through collaborative experiences, like pitching during Kei's practice sessions and helping Aoi conquer throwing anxieties by serving as a practice baserunner. His renewed commitment is captured in his statement: "You can't run from walls. So there's only one answer—face them and fight!"

Supplementary materials from a collaboration with Japan's Pacific League baseball teams highlighted his in-universe skills: "Steal◎," "Batting Eye◎," "Hit Maker," "Stubborn Hitter◎," and "Trickster." His popularity rose significantly in the series' character polls, moving from 6th place in 2022 to 2nd in 2024.
