Kochō Eightport, legally Kochō Yatsu, serves as a journalist for the tabloid Weekly Dry. She joined the publication three years prior to the series' events, proving herself as a capable junior reporter with multiple successful exposés across diverse topics like politics and art. Her aggressive investigative methods position her as a perceived threat to those targeted by her stories.
Physically, she is a short young woman with shoulder-length hair and notably large eyes. Her typical work attire consists of a short-sleeved light hoodie, knee-length skirt, short boots, and a backpack.
Her personality blends spirited enthusiasm and headstrong determination, especially when pursuing a story. She meticulously researches interview subjects and topics beforehand, strategically deploying this knowledge—as negotiation leverage or to select individuals for scenarios like fortunetelling sessions. Though generally fearless, she occasionally feels overwhelmed during investigations but perseveres regardless.
Her major involvement starts in her third year at Weekly Dry when assigned to the "Solitaire" case. After witnessing supernatural skeletons rescue children from a fire, she trails detectives Tsubaki Iwanome and Kōzaburō Arase, leading her to investigate Shinjuku fortuneteller Polka Shinoyama, the "Corpse God." She connects Solitaire's escape, the arson, and Polka's activities, suspecting police involvement in Solitaire's attempted assassination. She pitches this theory to her chief editor, securing space in the tabloid's occult section for a story on Polka.
To advance her investigation, she photographs Polka without consent at his shop and leverages her knowledge of his associate Takumi Kuruya's illegal drone operations to force cooperation. She negotiates an agreement to limit coverage to Polka's fortunetelling business and arranges sessions for two clients: Urai, an associate of building owner Clarissa Kuraki, and her chief editor. During Urai's session, Polka delivers an unsettling prediction about Urai’s missing coworker before a police raid—led by Officer Ikeuchi searching for a mugger—forces evacuation.
Post-raid, her chief editor urges her to transfer the investigation to senior reporter Himura Atari, citing escalating dangers. She refuses but reluctantly agrees to focus solely on the fortunetelling angle while vowing to center Polka in her reporting if needed.
Later, while researching Clarissa Kuraki, she uncovers an old Weekly Dry article about Clarissa's teenage kidnapping and learns building inspector Miyabi Hosorogi vanished in the same building five years earlier. Her chief editor reveals he omitted Hosorogi’s role as Clarissa’s rescuer and shares details of a suspicious police promotion after Hosorogi's disappearance, implicating Chief Superintendent Habaki.
This prompts her to contact her brother, Shinjuku Police officer Ranmaru Yatsu. Despite his initial reluctance due to her tabloid ties, she insists on sharing the Habaki lead. Ranmaru acknowledges its gravity and agrees to inform Detective Iwanome.
