Risa Kuraki, alias Clarissa, serves as a mediator and bartender in Shinjuku. She operates Youtoukorou, a legitimate bar fronting an illicit freelance agency coordinating underworld dealings. Her appearance features blonde hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive monocle over her left eye. She typically dons a custom bartender outfit with 16-centimeter gold heels, elevating her working height to 183 cm. Born wealthy as the granddaughter of industrialist Luis Kuraki, she inherited his fortune following her parents' disappearance. Abducted and nearly killed during high school, she was rescued by police officer Miyabi Hosorogi, who became her lover, forging a lifelong bond. During her recovery, while her left eye was medically patched, she visited an orphanage and met fellow former heiress Misaki Sakimiya, whose parents were murdered. This connection later brought Misaki to work under Clarissa at Youtoukorou. Clarissa and Hosorogi remained romantically involved until his assassination five years before the main events. Hideaki Habaki orchestrated the murder intending to frame Clarissa. Forewarned, she retrieved Hosorogi's corpse from the Torture Building's basement and disposed of it using one of the building's methods. She subsequently acquired and utilized the Torture Building for her operations. As a mediator, Clarissa pragmatically balances legality and criminality with a level head. She avoids unnecessary enemies but firmly protects her agency's interests. Her leadership blends strategic manipulation with genuine care for subordinates; she offers bonuses, checks on their well-being, and avoids compelling them into morally reprehensible acts unless unavoidable. This duality places her as a lighter shade of black in Shinjuku's underworld. Her agency handles contracts from intelligence gathering to assassinations, such as ordering the kill of Misaki's parents' murderer due to his escalating violence against innocents. When a client requested Polka Shinoyama's assassination, Misaki volunteered despite Clarissa noting Polka was only a child. The Polka hit failed when the target survived and killed Misaki through supernatural means. Clarissa arrived to find Misaki dead and Polka possessed by the Corpse God, an otherworldly necromancer. Witnessing the Corpse God summon skeletal constructs and resurrect Misaki, Clarissa shifted to diplomacy. She offered resources: shelter in the Torture Building, navigation of the Shinjuku underworld, and assigned Misaki and tech contractor Takumi Kuruya to support him. In exchange, she demanded confidentiality about Polka's would-be killer and renounced further hits on him. Her interactions with law enforcement, notably Comps-3 inspector Tsubaki Iwanome, showcase her political acumen. When Iwanome probed her agency's spike in activity after the Polka incident and a Shakuzawa Building fire, she disarmed him with hospitality and deflection. During the Lemmings incident at Youtoukorou—where the urban legend kidnapped Misaki—Clarissa stayed calm, dismissing Iwanome's supernatural queries as drunken imaginings. Personality-wise, Clarissa exhibits sharp intellect, composure under pressure, and a subtle, rarely admitted soft spot for children. She is bisexual, having been Hosorogi's lover and currently maintaining relationships with two women among her agency staff. Her polyamorous arrangements and lingering affection for Hosorogi reflect her complex emotional landscape. She acts as a reasonable authority, recognizing and adapting to outside-context problems like the Corpse God instead of needless antagonism. The alias "Clarissa" is a Sue Donym derived from reordering her Japanese name (Kura Risa) with removal of the "ki" syllable.
