Description
Maître des Corps, also known as the Corpse God, is the central figure of Dead Mount Death Play. He is a demonic necromancer of immense power who originally hailed from a fantasy world where he served as a court sorcerer of the Byandy Empire. In that world he was born as Rizdilusia Redrazalfe and was widely feared for his mastery over death and his ability to command the dead. His true name is rarely used; most know him only by his title, which refers to his control over corpses and his own undead nature.

The character’s backstory begins centuries before the events of the anime. He was a student of the necromancer Easlies Swordfrail, who taught him the arts of reanimation and reincarnation. Over the years he accumulated vast knowledge of necromantic magic and developed a desire to leave behind the cycle of violence that defined his existence. His final battle in his original world was against the legendary hero Shagrua Edith Lugrid, known as the Calamity Crusher. Facing defeat, Maître des Corps used a unique reincarnation spell on himself at the last moment. This transported his soul across space and time into the body of a recently assassinated teenage boy named Polka Shinoyama in modern‑day Shinjuku, Tokyo.

In terms of personality, Maître des Corps is surprisingly level‑headed and calm for a being labeled a demon. He is confident in his abilities but not arrogant, and he possesses a serious demeanor that can occasionally be lightened by moments of confusion, agitation, or even unexpected chattiness. He adapts to new situations with pragmatism rather than panic. His primary motivation after reincarnation is to secure a peaceful, quiet life, far removed from the endless battles he endured in his former world. However, he quickly finds himself entangled in the underground conflicts of Shinjuku, forcing him to use his powers to protect himself and his new allies.

His role in the story is that of the protagonist, though he does not act like a typical hero. He operates from the shadows, using his necromantic abilities and street‑smart allies to navigate a world full of assassins, church‑affiliated hunters, and supernatural threats. He adopts Polka’s identity and mannerisms to avoid detection, especially from the agents of the church who pursue him across worlds. Over the course of the anime, his character develops from a reclusive necromancer seeking solitude into someone who gradually builds genuine bonds with the people around him, even if he remains cautious about revealing his true nature.

Key relationships include his association with Misaki Sakimiya, the assassin who originally killed Polka’s body; after she is resurrected as a zombie by his magic, she becomes a loyal ally. He also works closely with Takumi Kuruya, an information broker who provides surveillance and intel, and Lisa Kuraki, a crime boss who helps him establish a foothold in the underworld. His most significant antagonist is Shagrua Lugrid, who followed him to the modern world and continues to hunt him. Another important figure is his former master Easlies, whose teachings still influence his magic and worldview.

Maître des Corps possesses a wide array of supernatural abilities. As a necromancer, he can reanimate corpses, create undead servants, and sense the spirits of the dead. He has a special trait known as the Evil Eye, which allows him to see and communicate with souls. He also possesses the Elemental Eye, inherited from his elven mother, which grants control over elemental forces. His reincarnation magic is his most unique skill, enabling him to transfer his consciousness across dimensions. Additionally, he can sympathize with the spirits of the deceased, using their senses to gather information. Despite his power, he is not invincible; his new human body has limitations, and he must carefully manage his energy and avoid drawing too much attention. Throughout the series, he learns to blend necromancy with modern technology and tactics, showing a flexible and inventive mind.

Maître des Corps is a complex character who straddles the line between villainous legend and sympathetic survivor. His journey from a feared necromancer to a reluctant participant in a new world’s conflicts, all while seeking peace, forms the emotional and narrative core of Dead Mount Death Play.
