Description
Zoe Ivy is a half-human, half-gorgon student attending the College alongside Chise Hatori. Born to a wizard specializing in non-human languages and a gorgon from the Caucasus Mountains, he emerged from an egg and was raised primarily by his father within an isolated gorgon community near the Black Sea. This sheltered upbringing left him inexperienced with the outside world, struggling to adjust to human society and technology like vending machines or airplanes. Due to historical persecution targeting gorgons for their body parts and eyes, his kind lives secluded, communicating through vocal ranges inaudible to humans. His father, a College alumnus, encouraged him to attend the institution to learn coexistence skills beyond their community.

Physically, Zoe possesses chin-length light green hair and matching reptilian eyes with vertical pupils, lacking eyebrows—a gorgon trait. He stands approximately 160 cm tall. To manage his heritage, he dons red earmuffs to prevent his hair from involuntarily shifting into sentient black snakes and wears goggles to mitigate light sensitivity from his enhanced vision. Removing these devices triggers his transformation, elongating his hair into snakes and sharpening his ears. His eyes shift to an eight-pointed star pattern when employing gorgon abilities.

Initially, Zoe exhibits shyness and social anxiety, intensified by unfamiliarity with human interactions. He avoids Chise and Elias after sensing Chise's dragon curse, which agitates his gorgon physiology—a reaction rooted in gorgons' mythical descent from dragons. This triggers hostile outbursts where he labels them "monsters," particularly after Lucy Webster forcibly removes his earmuffs, exposing his nature. Following clarification of the misunderstanding by Chise and friends, he apologizes and transitions into a friendly, cheerful personality. He displays naïveté, caring deeply for friends like Lucy, Isaac Farrar, and Rían Scrimgeour, yet grapples with self-esteem over his hybrid identity. Notably, under extreme stress when his gorgon abilities fully manifest, his demeanor shifts to confident and aggressive, often with no memory afterward.

His abilities encompass standard gorgon traits: enhanced sight, smell, and hearing, which render him vulnerable to sensory overload. His hair snakes possess independent consciousness and can paralyze targets through eye contact. Unlike most gorgons, he wields a rare capacity for full petrification, though he remains unaware of this potential. He also demonstrates curse manipulation, such as dismantling mental curses controlling a werewolf, though this exhausts him. As a half-gorgon with a human magical core, he can practice sorcery but requires training in archery or spear for physical combat.

Throughout his College tenure, Zoe evolves from isolation to active camaraderie. He participates in critical events, including tracking Philomela Sargant during a lockdown caused by the Testament of Carnamagos. During this mission, confronting a cursed werewolf triggers his gorgon side to petrify the control bolts in her head, freeing her from Elizabeth Sargant's influence. His relationship with Lucy deepens when she calls his snake hair "beautiful"—a culturally significant gesture among gorgons—sparking mutual affection. He bonds with Chise over shared experiences as newcomers, non-native English speakers, and part-human outcasts, solidifying his integration into their social circle.
