TV-Series
Description
Hayato Kunato is the older brother of Hyoma Kunato, the protagonist of Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari, and the twin sibling of Kusui Kunato. His background is deeply tied to a tragic event that shapes the entire narrative: he was killed by a powerful tsukumogami named Tenjitsu, also referred to as Tenbi or Karakasa no Tsukumogami, which also devoured his sister and gave Hyoma the chance to escape. This traumatic loss directly fuels Hyoma's initial hatred for all tsukumogami. Hayato is not a character who appears in the present timeline of the story but exists as a significant figure in the past, serving as a primary motivation for his surviving brother.

In terms of personality, Hayato was known for having a proud and self-important demeanor, often referring to himself using the arrogant pronoun ore-sama. This reflects a strong sense of self-confidence that was acknowledged by others. His primary motivation, as far as can be understood from his brief depiction, was to excel in combat and live up to his own high standards as a prodigy. He does not have an active role in the main plot due to his death before the series begins, but his memory functions as a core component of Hyoma Kunato's character arc and his initial prejudice against spirits. The key relationship is therefore with his brother Hyoma, and his death is the central trauma that defines their family's history. He is also noted as the twin of his sister, Kusui, who was described as very gentle and acted as a caretaker for Hyoma.

Regarding his development, Hayato does not undergo any change within the story as he is already deceased. His notable abilities, however, are well-documented. Hayato was a self-proclaimed prodigy in the art of combat, a title that others also agreed with. He was considered a fighting genius, and by the time he was only sixteen years old, his combat ability was said to have already surpassed that of Zouhei Kunato, his grandfather and the head of the Kunato family, who was active and renowned for his strength at that time. His fate is a sad one, as his remarkable talent did not prevent his demise at the hands of the powerful spirit, Tenjitsu. His name, Hayato, carries the meaning of falcon person.
