Description
Greg Young is a veteran inspector serving with the Shield City Police Department, a seasoned officer whose career has placed him at the center of a hidden conflict. A mature adult with brown hair and brown eyes, he typically presents an appearance marked by a tie and coat, with stubble suggesting a no-nonsense, weathered demeanor.

Inspector Young belongs to a unique and unenviable category of individuals who are fully aware of the existence of the X-Playing Cards, powerful artifacts that grant supernatural abilities to those who wield them. This knowledge sets him apart from most citizens and regular officers, forcing him to navigate a dangerous world where ordinary law enforcement protocols are often ineffective. His awareness of the Cards fuels a careful and detached approach to the two primary factions vying for them: the High Card group, which officially operates under the royal family, and the Klondike mafia family. Despite his position on the side of the law, he does not fully align himself with either group, maintaining a distance born of experience and pragmatism.

In his role at the police department, Greg supervises Sugar Peace, a rookie detective who is highly motivated but lacks experience with the supernatural elements at play. He is often seen advising her against delving too deeply into the affairs of Pinochle or the X-Playing Cards, a reflection of his own understanding of the grave dangers involved. His caution stems from a history most officers do not share. Long ago, Greg was a significant friend to both Theodore Constantine Pinochle, the CEO of Pinochle who leads High Card, and Ban Klondike, the head of the Klondike family. An unspecified incident shattered this friendship, and subsequent pressure from police superiors and government officials forced Greg to keep the Cards a secret for the sake of national security, further driving a wedge between him and his former allies. While he maintains a professional and courteous demeanor, particularly with Ban, their interactions are heavily marked by underlying tension.

One of the most profound personal burdens Greg carries is his connection to the past of Finn Oldman, a member of High Card. Greg was the investigator in charge of the case concerning the deaths of Finn’s family, but his superiors forced him to close the investigation due to the involvement of the X-Playing Cards. This unresolved case remains a heavy weight on his conscience. His actions and moral compass are motivated by a form of procedural integrity; even when it conflicts with past loyalties, he adheres to the rule of law, such as when he authorizes the legal placement of High Card members into police custody during operations.

Although Greg possesses no special abilities granted by a card, making him a normal human in a superpowered conflict, he should not be underestimated. He displays considerable tactical skill and resourcefulness, demonstrating that experience and quick thinking can overcome raw power. In one notable instance, he manages to incapacitate a Player named Love-P by strategically shooting a piece of debris so that it falls on her head, knocking her out cleanly. He also successfully apprehends another Player, Burst, who was disguised as someone else.

Despite his careful and detached attitude, Greg Young’s extensive knowledge of the X-Playing Cards and the activities of the royal family ultimately becomes a fatal liability. Because he refuses to cease his inquiries into matters he believes the public has a right to know, he is targeted. Prince Noah of Fourland, who is conspiring with the Klondikes, hires an assassin to murder Greg, preventing his investigations from exposing sensitive truths. This assassination occurs specifically because Greg refuses to stop asking questions. His death is a turning point that profoundly impacts his protégé, Sugar Peace, who is spurred to confront Prince Noah after discovering his role in the murder.
