Description
Shōkichi Komachi is a Japanese man driven by a strong sense of justice, though he dislikes conflict. At age 15, he killed his childhood friend Nanao Akita's abusive stepfather with his bare hands to protect her. After juvenile prison, he voluntarily underwent the B.U.G.S. genetic modification to join Nanao on the BUGS 2 mission to Mars. Physically fit with neck-length spiky hair, he later grows a goatee. He exhibits a laid-back, caring attitude towards subordinates but extreme aggression when loved ones are threatened. This duality is starkly shown when Nanao is killed by a Terraformar in 2599 A.D.; her death triggers a violent rampage. Initial transformation attempts are halted by crewmates Thien and Maria Viren. Returning her body to the ship, he is further provoked by God Lee's disparaging remarks.
During the mission, he demonstrates tactical skill by proposing to suffocate trapped Terraformars via fire on the BUGS 2 spacecraft, initially volunteering to stay behind until dissuaded by Thien. After an ambush at the BUGS 1 crash site, he injects the serum and single-handedly kills ten Terraformars using his insect abilities, earning the lieutenant's recognition. He later retrieves Nanao's corpse from a Terraformar in the infirmary, defeating it through brute strength after losing his primary weapons. He escapes Mars with Ichiro Hiruma following Thien's sacrificial death.
His B.U.G.S. modification uses the Japanese giant hornet (*Vespa mandarinia japonica*), granting enhanced strength and twin retractable stingers on each hand that deliver potent venom. The hornet's aggressive nature initially causes uncontrolled ferocity in his transformed state, requiring crew warnings. This manifests when he continues attacking Terraformars post-mortem.
Twenty years later (2619 A.D.), he leads Annex I’s Japanese-American squad. His control over transformation significantly improves, eliminating prior aggression. New abilities include firing stingers as armor-piercing projectiles and employing martial arts techniques. However, his venom proves ineffective against organisms with superior toxins, like Liu Yiwu’s blue-ringed octopus abilities. He travels to Bangkok with Michelle K. Davis to recruit Akari Hizamaru, confirming Akari's combat skills in an underground arena first. When Akari attacks him upon learning of Yuriko Minamoto’s death, Shōkichi remains composed. He reveals his own loss and persuades Akari to join Annex I to help others afflicted with the Alien Engine Virus.
He enjoys tropical fish and coral cultivation but dislikes cockroaches and confined spaces. Among BUGS 2 members, he ranked third in arm wrestling and sixth among officers.
