Description
Evil Star Ryouga, whose full name is Ryoga Jasei, is a complex figure who begins as a formidable antagonist within the Shadowverse Flame series. His background is rooted in the Shadowverse Battle College, where he once served as the president of the Second Blood club. He obtained this position not through standard means, but by intimidating the previous president into stepping down, showcasing his early tendency towards ruthless ambition. However, he became disillusioned with the environment, leading him to abandon both the school and his club, leaving Second Blood inactive. It was during this time that he unexpectedly received the Digital Friend Demonium. Rejecting the creature entirely, he dismissed it as insignificant data and cruelly ordered it away, reinforcing his belief that only raw strength held value. This period of isolation forged his cold and detached demeanor.

Ryouga's personality is initially defined by cruelty and emotional detachment. He holds a deep disdain for those who find joy or friendship in Shadowverse, focusing singularly on crushing opponents through merciless tactics. This harsh perspective is reflected in his speech, as he frequently employs terminology from classical music and symphonic metal, referring to others and their efforts with words like "noise" and "rhythm," which underscores his view of the world as a cold, unfeeling composition. His motivations are straightforward at first: to prove that only power matters and to annihilate anyone who believes otherwise.

His role in the story is primarily that of a rival who gradually shifts from a pure antagonist to a reluctant ally. A significant turning point occurs when Itsuki Mitsutagawa returns Demonium to him and challenges his callous philosophy. Although Ryouga defeats Itsuki in their first battle and derides him as a "spoiled brat," he privately concedes that Itsuki is an "interesting noise," marking the first crack in his emotional facade. Later, as part of arrangements made by Mikado Shirogane, he participates in the Shadowverse Club Tournament as Second Blood's representative. His subsequent loss to Itsuki deepens his respect for the duelist and begins to alter his view on meaningful competition.

Ryouga's development is driven by his relationships. His connection with Itsuki forces him to acknowledge a world beyond pure victory, while his rivalry with Wolfram Zerga reignites his competitive drive. Initially dismissing the Shadowverse World Ranking, Ryouga is provoked by Wolfram into a battle that leads to his collapse. Demonium, still caring for its neglectful master, summons Itsuki for help, an act that prompts Ryouga to finally enter the World Ranking, where he rapidly ascends to second place. During the Seven Shadows Arc, he confronts Wolfram again within the Shadow Area. Facing a near defeat that would lead to disqualification, Ryouga experiences a profound epiphany: his true motivation was never simply power, but the exhilaration of battling strong opponents, win or lose. This realization triggers Demonium's evolution into Demonium, Crush Devil, securing his victory and forcing him to finally acknowledge his Digital Friend's worth, even offering an apology for his past neglect.

This development continues into the final conflict against the Arc Ruler's Shade invasion. Ryouga defies the directives of the Genesis Corporation, choosing to operate independently and refusing their Nexa System. He is later recruited by Mikado for a high-stakes, life-risking duel against Himmel in the Sky Tower. There, his bond with Demonium deepens further, allowing it to evolve again into Demonium, Ultimate Devil, ensuring their survival. He goes on to support Light Tenryu in the conclusive battle against Wolfram Zerga, contributing his empowered Demonium to clear a path for victory. After the world is saved, he accepts the Arc Ruler's offer to erase the memories of their heroism to protect their anonymity. Despite this, a lingering connection to the community he once spurned remains, as he later visits Shadowverse College just to observe a duel between Light and Mikado.

In terms of notable abilities, Ryouga is a master of the Bloodcraft class, specializing in a high-risk, high-reward strategy focused on achieving the Wrath state. This involves carefully controlling self-damage to his own leader through cards like Demon Maestro and Ambling Wraith. Once the requisite damage threshold is met, he unleashes powerful effects to overwhelm the opponent. To sustain his defense during this aggressive self-harm, his deck includes healing effects and followers with the Drain ability, such as Devilish Flautist, which restore his lost defense points. His ace card, Howling Demon, is a devastating finisher that perfectly exemplifies his battle style of controlled aggression.
