Description
Nagi Kirigaya enrolls in an academy on a technologically advanced island where students resolve conflicts and vie for status through competitive games. His primary goal is locating a childhood friend he believes is on the island, though specifics about this person or their shared past are undefined. An accidental encounter leads Nagi to accept a challenge from Sarasa Saionji, the undefeated top-ranked "Seven Star." Unfamiliar with academy systems and skipping tutorials, Nagi sends a blank challenge request, forcing Sarasa to interpret it as confidence he can beat her at any game. Their resulting staring contest ends in her unforeseen loss, granting Nagi a rare "Red Star" that allows him to deceive others about his rank and abilities.

Facing potential expulsion due to his low initial rank and the taboo of defeating the top student, Nagi accepts a plan from headmistress Natsume Ichinose, a former Red Star holder. He begins impersonating a Seven Star, crafting an unbeatable persona to deter challengers—a necessary deception to stay on the island and continue his search. He receives logistical support from "Company": Shirayuki Himeji acts as his maid and guide, while Ami Kagaya assists with technical manipulations during games.

Nagi’s early victories depend heavily on external aid and luck, not genuine skill. During a racing game against Haru Urasaka, Kagaya’s hacking secures his win while Nagi fabricates explanations about non-existent high-level abilities. Sarasa later reveals her own secret: she is Rina Akabane impersonating the real Sarasa Saionji, who orchestrated her disappearance to live normally. Nagi agrees to protect this secret, understanding her desire for autonomy; exposure of either deception jeopardizes them both, intertwining their fates.

As challenges intensify, Nagi adapts strategically despite his low-level limitations. Confronted by Seiran Kugasaki, who doubts his abilities, Nagi devises a plan exploiting rule ambiguities with the "Rule Breaker" ability in a card-collecting game, neutralizing Kugasaki’s numerical advantage. During this conflict, Sarasa confesses the full truth about the real Sarasa’s voluntary departure, deepening their mutual trust. Nagi’s defense of her choices reveals his underlying integrity despite the charade. His actions shift from reactive survival to calculated risk-taking, leveraging the Red Star’s power to navigate the academy’s competitive pressures.
