TV-Series
Description
Iharu Furuhashi is a young adult male with distinctive pink hair styled in a punk fashion, featuring a shaved sidecut. He has orange eyes and sharp teeth. As an officer in the Defense Force, he wears the standard combat suit with dark green and silver protective padding on the shoulders, wrists, back waist, and legs. In battle, he utilizes a respirator mask and primarily wields a rifle, later adopting an electrified shotgun designated SG-1108 after specialized training.
His personality is intensely competitive and prideful, driven by a strong need to prove himself. He dislikes losing and frequently boasts about his abilities, particularly comparing himself to peers like Reno Ichikawa. This rivalry stems from deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and an inferiority complex, as he struggles to match the rapid progress of others despite his past academic successes. Before joining the Defense Force, he consistently ranked first in his class at Hachioji Neutralization Technical College, excelling in academics and sports and graduating as valedictorian. This fostered an overinflated ego and belief in his inherent superiority. However, his experience within the Defense Force, where many peers surpass him, challenges this self-perception, leading to significant internal conflict.
His motivation to join the Defense Force originated in middle school when Mina Ashiro rescued him from a kaiju attack, an event that profoundly inspired him. During the entrance exams, he ranked third in the fitness test and achieved a 14% released combat power during the aptitude test. After passing, he joined the Third Division. On his first mission in Sagamihara with the Ikaruga Platoon, he witnessed Reno Ichikawa's rapid combat improvement. Confronted by the disguised Kaiju No. 9, Iharu initially followed orders to retreat and call for help. Overcome by remorse over his perceived weakness and history of being protected—first by Mina and then by Reno—he defied orders and returned to aid the injured Reno. This marked a pivotal moment, showcasing his underlying loyalty and willingness to risk his life for comrades, even as Kaiju No. 8 intervened.
Following the destruction of Tachikawa Base and the revelation of Kafka Hibino's identity as Kaiju No. 8, Iharu transferred to the Fourth Division alongside Reno. He viewed this as another opportunity to compete and vowed not to lose to Reno. Under Captain Jugo Ogata's command, his combat abilities developed significantly. Captain Ogata identified Iharu as a "Flash Adapter," a rare physiological trait from a unique brain structure. This ability allows explosive, uncontrollable spikes in released combat power—fluctuating from his base of 24% to 42%—during intense battle situations, though he couldn't sustain these spikes initially. Ogata, recognizing this as the third recorded case in the Defense Force, trained Iharu in a specialized "Desperate Combat Style" designed to leverage these bursts by inducing a brief trance state, predicting mastery could allow Iharu to surpass Reno.
His growth was displayed during a live-fire test where Reno utilized Numbers Weapon 6. When Reno lost control against a Honju, endangering himself and the mission, Iharu broke through Reno's ice barrier against orders. He encouraged Reno, carried him to safety, and devised a tactical plan. Utilizing a spike in his released combat power, he attacked the Honju to expose its core, enabling Reno to deliver the finishing blow. This act solidified their partnership and demonstrated Iharu's evolving tactical mind and resolve. His released combat power later reached 88% through mastery of his Flash Adapter ability.
Regarding Kafka Hibino, Iharu expressed fear upon learning of Kafka's kaiju form but affirmed Kafka remained a valued ally. He prefers punk rock music, motorcycles, tokusatsu TV heroes, and soda-flavored Gori Gori Kun popsicles. His hairstyle is reused from previous character designs by series creator Naoya Matsumoto.
