Description
Chilchuck Tims is a half-foot, a race known for its small stature, youthful appearance, and larger ears. While he shares the diminutive size common to his kind, standing about 110 centimeters tall, he is said to be tall for a half-foot and maintains a slender build. Despite often being mistaken for a child due to his appearance, he is in fact the oldest member of the adventuring party, with his twenty-nine years being the equivalent of a human in his fifties.

His personality is defined by shrewdness and practicality. Having experienced exploitation in his youth, he rarely accepts work without being paid in advance. He is generally calm and thoughtful, frequently serving as the voice of reason and the most mature member of the group, a role that sometimes puts him in conflict with his more eccentric companions. Chilchuck prefers to keep his private life separate from his professional dealings, a policy born from his belief that interpersonal issues are the most common cause of party disputes. Consequently, he reveals little about himself, though it is known he is married, has three adult daughters, and is currently separated from his wife.

Chilchuck’s primary motivation is survival, both his own and that of his allies. His practical nature makes him risk-averse, and he is quick to suggest retreat and regrouping when a situation becomes too dangerous, not out of cowardice, but from a genuine fear of his companions dying. This strong sense of responsibility is directly tied to his role in the story as the party’s locksmith and rogue. His job is to find secret passages, unlock doors, and, most critically, disarm the numerous deadly traps found within the dungeon. The pressure of this task, where a single mistake could mean immediate death for his friends, often puts him on edge. He becomes easily agitated when his warnings are ignored or when other members, like Senshi, fail to follow his precise instructions.

Within the party, his key relationship is with the group as a whole, whom he sees as a necessary but sometimes reckless responsibility. He is more open to eating monsters than the elf Marcille, but shares her hard line against consuming demi-humans. His dynamic with Senshi evolves from initial frustration at the dwarf’s disregard for trap safety to a mutual respect, with Chilchuck even offering to teach Senshi about traps in exchange for cooking lessons. His guarded nature extends to his personal history; while he rarely discusses it, his deep-seated hatred for mimics stems from a history of repeated deaths caused by them.

Throughout the story, Chilchuck experiences subtle but significant development. His initial insistence on professional distance is challenged, particularly when circumstances force him to confront his true feelings. In a moment of vulnerability, he expresses his desperate wish not to let his comrades die, revealing that beneath his pragmatic exterior lies a deep emotional investment in their safety. This marks a shift from purely transactional involvement to a more honest, if reluctant, recognition of his bonds with the others.

Chilchuck’s notable abilities are almost entirely non-combative, as he frequently claims to lack combat skills. His talents lie in his agility, dexterity, and keen senses, which he uses for unlocking and trap disarmament. He is an expert at manipulating dungeon mechanisms, able to trigger specific traps on command for a purpose, such as using an oil dispenser for cooking or a blade trap to cut up monster carcasses. Despite his protests, he is capable in a fight when necessary, demonstrating skill with thrown weapons and a crossbow to provide rear support. Outside of his adventuring gear, he is known to be quite fond of alcohol, with a particular appreciation for ale, and has a strong dislike for sweet side dishes.
