Description
Akimi Arimura, the third eldest sister in the Arimura family, is a middle school student grappling with typical adolescent struggles. Persistent bullying over her physical appearance, particularly her glasses, marks her daily life, driving her to seek solitude to vent her frustrations.
Her world shifts dramatically upon encountering Junkers, a Schnauzer, by the riverbank. She is stunned when he speaks to her, revealing his ability to converse and perform miracles. Introducing Junkers to her sisters meets skepticism until he demonstrates his power by miraculously repairing a broken tree and swing in their yard.
Akimi lives with her three sisters following their mother Misako's disappearance during a Paris trip and their father's subsequent death from grief. The household consists of Haruka, the eldest at 30, who shoulders responsibility; Natsuno, in her 20s, preoccupied with romance; and Fuyuko, the youngest at 10, who retains no memories of their mother. Akimi serves as the central figure in the sisters' initial encounter with Junkers.
A news report showing their mother alive in Paris as a fashion designer prompts Akimi to join her sisters and Junkers on a journey to France. During this trip, she observes Fuyuko's reluctance to reunite, stemming from Fuyuko's lack of memories and fear of Misako's abandonment. The sisters debate using Junkers' final miracle to restore their mother's memory—lost in a car accident—but ultimately choose not to, prioritizing the emotional needs of a French girl bonded with their amnesiac mother.
Akimi's development culminates in a dream sequence after returning to Japan, where she and her sisters envision their deceased father acknowledging their maturity and affirming their difficult choice about their mother. Later, Junkers independently uses his final miracle to restore Misako’s memory, allowing her to visit her daughters in Japan while choosing to remain in France long-term.
