Description
Hailing from Wano Country’s golden age centuries past, Shimotsuki Ryūma descended from the prestigious Shimotsuki samurai lineage. His unmatched swordsmanship earned him the legendary title "Sword God," solidified by slaying a dragon in a single strike—a feat echoing through generations. His blade, Shusui, transformed into a Black Blade through endless combat, ranked among the 21 Great Grade Swords, and later enshrined as Wano’s national treasure.

Ryūma governed his life by an unyielding code: honor demanded repaying debts, especially lives saved. This conviction sometimes compelled blind obedience to creditors, overriding personal judgment. He valued battles by what they protected, not glory won. A peculiar habit saw him treat any sheath contact—even accidental—as a duel challenge, believing "the sword is the swordsman," frequently sparking needless violence.

Chronic financial recklessness left Ryūma starved and destitute. After five days without food, he stumbled into a town where waitress Flare offered him a meal. Learning her village was dragon-ravaged, leaving her the sole survivor, Ryūma revered her resilience. He voiced ambition to challenge "King," holder of the ultimate "Warrior’s Soul," unaware townsfolk bestowed this title upon him for his own deeds.

When thief D.R. framed Ryūma for stabbing him and summoned a dragon with a Dragon Horn, the town blamed Ryūma. Flare, deceived, accused him of causing the catastrophe. Cyrano—falsely hailed as Flare’s savior—confronted the dragon. Ryūma uncovered Cyrano and D.R.’s plot: they orchestrated both Flare’s village destruction and the current attack to loot treasures. Witnessing Flare’s despair upon realizing the truth, Ryūma faced the conspirators. Though Cyrano, the world’s second-strongest swordsman, had previously defeated Ryūma by exploiting his emotions, Ryūma effortlessly slew Cyrano in their final clash. He then beheaded the dragon in one stroke, repaying Flare’s debt and unknowingly embodying the "King" mantle.

Ryūma perished at 47 from illness. His body, entombed in Wano’s frigid Ringo region, remained preserved for centuries until pirate Gecko Moria robbed the grave, stealing both corpse and Shusui. Moria reanimated the body as a Thriller Bark zombie general by implanting Brook the skeleton pirate’s shadow. The zombie retained Ryūma’s combat mastery and physique but mirrored Brook’s laugh, perverse quirks, and cruelty. Wielding Shusui, it amplified Brook’s sword techniques with Ryūma’s strength.

This zombie twice defeated Brook by targeting his afro attachment. Later battling Roronoa Zoro across Hogback’s lab and rooftops, it fell to Zoro’s blue-flamed Hiryu: Kaen technique. Acknowledging defeat, the zombie bequeathed Shusui to Zoro before Brook’s shadow left, immolating the corpse.

Ryūma directly ancestored Shimotsuki Ushimaru, Ringo’s daimyo, and Roronoa Zoro—a bloodline confirmed in supplementary materials, unknown to Zoro. His dragon-slaying legacy and "Sword God" renown shaped Wano’s cultural identity, with his deeds fueling national pride for centuries.
