Description
Isamu Kurogane, nicknamed "Moody", hails from Japan on Earth. He trained at Tokyo's Fuji Space School alongside his future teammates before departing on a space voyage. Returning around 1999, they found Earth devastated by nuclear war and were captured by the Galra Empire. Enduring gladiatorial combat in Emperor Daibazaal's arena, they eventually escaped to the planet Altea.

On Altea, Isamu and his companions were selected to pilot the five robotic lions forming the mighty sentient robot GoLion, the sole weapon capable of opposing the Galra. Isamu piloted the Red Lion, which forms Voltron's right arm, wearing a blue uniform. He is approximately 21-23 years old, sporting medium-brown hair styled in a mullet, beady eyes, and distinctive lips. His typical attire consists of a brown bomber jacket, blue turtleneck, and grey-brown slacks.

Personality-wise, Isamu exhibits sarcasm, wit, and a tendency to tease others, earning the nickname "Moody" due to his unpredictable temperament. Following Takashi Shirogane's death in episode 6, he serves as the team's second-in-command and remains the only member who consistently challenges leader Akira Kogane's decisions. A skilled and daring pilot, his recklessness occasionally endangers missions. He demonstrates loyalty to his comrades and a willingness to perform dangerous tasks, such as retrieving a cure for Princess Fala when she fell ill – an occasion where his uniform temporarily matched his Red Lion's colors.

Isamu harbors romantic feelings for Princess Fala, contributing to a subtle rivalry with Akira. His background includes a claim of expertise in "wrangling cats" on Earth. The surname "Kurogane" translates to "iron" or "black metal", reflecting his resilient nature.

In broader media appearances like the crossover game *Super Robot Wars W*, Isamu and the GoLion team assist other protagonists against threats including the Galra Empire and Jovians on Mars. Their backstory remains consistent: captured after Earth's destruction, escaped to ruined Altea, and returned to Earth to warn of the Galra invasion.

Isamu is known in some adaptations by the alias "Lance McClain", part of maintaining dual identities for secrecy during their expedition. This alias is particularly used in Western adaptations like *Voltron: Defender of the Universe*, where he retains his role as Red Lion pilot and sarcastic team member.
