Description
Ja Wangnan, also known as Naru Ōno, is a main protagonist in the second part of Tower of God, specifically introduced during the Return of the Prince arc and continuing into the Workshop Battle arc. He is a young Regular who repeatedly attempts the E-Rank screening test on the 20th Floor, failing time and again but refusing to give up on his dreams. Wangnan aspires to become the king of the entire Tower, a goal he declares openly and pursues with relentless determination. He values his own willpower above the desires of others and plans to climb every floor to reach the true top, unlike those who have abandoned their ambitions.
Wangnan has a magnetic and outgoing personality that draws people toward him. He is sensitive to the pain and deaths suffered by those around him, showing genuine empathy and a strong sense of justice. Despite his often cheerful and boisterous demeanor, he is not naive and can be deeply affected by betrayal and loss. He holds a strong conviction that the cycle of violence and injustice in the Tower must be broken, and he strives to change the system rather than perpetuate it. This moral backbone drives many of his actions, such as when he chooses forgiveness over revenge after witnessing the death of a friend.
His core motivation is to become the king of the Tower, a goal he pursues not out of selfish ambition but out of a desire to reform the Tower and protect its inhabitants. He believes that true kingship requires understanding and changing the suffering within the Tower rather than simply ruling over it. This motivation is tied to a ring he possesses, which bears the crest of Zahard, hinting at a deeper connection to the royal lineage, though he dismisses the ring as trivial.
In the story, Wangnan serves as a counterpart and foil to the protagonist Bam, also known as Jue Viole Grace. He meets Bam during the 20th Floor tests and invites him to join his team of Regulars, forming a bond that continues through the Workshop Battle. During the Workshop Battle arc, Wangnan leads his team, Team Ramen, into the competition held on the 30th Floor. He takes charge of the first individual match of the tournament, facing off against opponents alongside his teammates Hon Akraptor, Mana, and Prince. When Mana is driven berserk by an opponent's ability, Wangnan works with his team to restore her sanity rather than simply defeating her. Throughout the battle, he coordinates with Khun Aguero Agnes to summon allies and execute strategies, proving himself as a capable leader who prioritizes the safety of his comrades.
Key relationships include his friendship with Viole, whom he sees as a powerful ally and friend despite Viole's affiliation with FUG. He also forms a team with Hon Akraptor, Prince, Mana, and later allies with Khun, Rachel, and others. He has a complex relationship with Khun, who initially views him with suspicion but eventually trusts him as a key partner in rescuing Bam. Wangnan also shares a significant connection with a character named Nia, a boy he befriends during the tests whose death deeply affects him and reinforces his resolve to fight injustice.
Wangnan undergoes notable development during the Workshop Battle. He starts as a struggling Regular who constantly fails tests but evolves into a more confident and strategic leader. The death of Nia forces him to confront the harsh realities of the Tower and hardens his determination to change it. He learns to channel his idealism into practical action, working alongside veteran climbers and facing powerful enemies. His relationship with Viole deepens as he comes to understand Viole's past and motivations, including Viole's promise to make Rachel pay for a past betrayal. This shared trauma between them strengthens their bond.
In terms of abilities, Wangnan possesses average combat skills compared to other Regulars, but he compensates with cleverness and creativity. He has a good understanding of Shinsu and is able to think on his feet during tests. He carries a ring with the Zahard crest, which may have hidden significance, and he uses a water bottle to control Shinsu in a manner similar to his opponent Kim Lurker, demonstrating his resourcefulness. Notably, he has a special ability tied to a sword called Excalibur, which he acquires later in the story, and this weapon may corrupt or influence his path. He also shows resilience and an ability to inspire others, making him a valuable team leader.
