Description
Young Rei Furuya faced significant childhood challenges stemming from his mixed Japanese heritage. This often led to bullying and physical fights. The resulting injuries brought him to Dr. Elena Miyano, who treated his wounds and counseled him against fighting, calling herself his "sensei". Her sudden disappearance after becoming involved with the Karasuma Group deeply impacted him and later influenced his career choice. His natural blonde hair, a trait from his heritage, further contributed to social isolation and conflicts.

During this time, he formed a close friendship with Hiromitsu Morofushi, who bestowed the childhood nickname "Zero". This name held deep personal meaning and would later become his operational designation within the National Police Agency. He also had incidental encounters with other Miyano family members: Akemi Miyano once guided him to Elena's hospital, and he later met Shiho Miyano's parents.

Driven by a desire to uncover Elena Miyano's fate and motivated by justice, he enrolled in the police academy. There, he distinguished himself as the top-ranked student academically and physically in his cohort, excelling in intellectual reasoning and combat skills like boxing and jujitsu. His academy years forged critical bonds with classmates Kenji Hagiwara, Jinpei Matsuda, Wataru Date, and Hiromitsu Morofushi. These relationships involved camaraderie and conflict, such as initial clashes with Matsuda over differing personalities that evolved into mutual respect during collaborative efforts, including a rescue operation for their instructor.

After graduation, he joined the National Police Agency's Public Security Bureau in its "Zero" division. He then undertook a deep-cover mission to infiltrate the criminal Black Organization. To protect associates, he severed personal ties and adopted the alias "Tooru Amuro", working as a freelance detective to obscure his true background. Within the organization, he earned the codename "Bourbon" and formed a professional rapport with fellow undercover agent Hiromitsu Morofushi (Scotch).

Four years prior to the main timeline, a pivotal moment occurred when Morofushi's cover was compromised. Rei arrived to find Shuichi Akai (Rye), an FBI infiltrator, attempting to stop Morofushi's suicide. Misinterpreting approaching footsteps as enemy forces, Morofushi fatally shot himself. Rei discovered the scene and incorrectly concluded Akai was responsible, igniting a lasting vendetta. This event profoundly shaped his subsequent actions and motivations.

The cumulative loss of his academy friends—Hagiwara, Matsuda, and Date in separate incidents, followed by Morofushi—left him emotionally isolated. While maintaining professional relationships, like with subordinate Yuya Kazami, he internalized his grief, typically processing it alone. Habits and knowledge from his friends persisted in his behavior, such as applying bomb-defusing techniques learned from Matsuda or judo skills taught by Date, reflecting their enduring influence on his methods and values.

His triple identity demanded constant adaptation: the cheerful, helpful cafe worker Amuro Tooru at Café Poirot and apprentice to Kogoro Mouri; the secretive, strategically cruel Bourbon within the Black Organization, investigating Conan Edogawa and Shuichi Akai; and the duty-bound PSB officer Furuya Rei. Each persona employed distinct approaches, requiring significant psychological compartmentalization, though his underlying commitment to justice and protecting Japan remained consistent.
