Description
Mao is a central figure in the anime MAO, the animated adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi’s manga series. He is a young mystic and onmyoji, a practitioner of traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology and divination, who lives during the Taisho period of early 1900s Japan. Mao’s existence is marked by an ancient curse placed upon him by a cat demon named Byoki, which controls lifespans and has forced him to endure life for over nine hundred years. His background is deeply rooted in the Heian era, where he studied under a master alongside senior disciples including Hyakka, who wields fire techniques, and Kamon, who uses wood techniques. The mystery surrounding the death of his master’s daughter, Yurako, some nine centuries earlier continues to haunt him and is tied to his present journey.

Mao is characterized by a reserved, pragmatic demeanor. He is often reluctant to involve others in his dangerous dealings with malevolent spirits and curses, but he is not cold or indifferent. His long life has given him a measured, sometimes weary perspective, yet he retains a strong sense of purpose and a willingness to protect those caught in supernatural conflicts. His primary motivation is to track down and confront the cat demon Byoki, the source of his curse, and to resolve the lingering mysteries from his past. This quest drives him to investigate a series of bizarre and gruesome incidents that blur the line between the human and spirit worlds.

In the story, Mao meets Nanoka Kiba, a junior high school student from the Reiwa era who accidentally travels through a portal to the Taisho period. Mao rescues her from a yokai, and their fates become entwined. Nanoka has her own connection to the curse, as she is able to wield Mao’s cursed sword—the Hagunsei—without being doomed, something no one else can do. This shared burden forms the core of their partnership. As they work together to solve supernatural murders and uncover the truth behind the curse, their relationship deepens from initial mutual wariness to a solid, cooperative bond built on trust and shared danger.

Mao also has significant ties to other characters from his past. Hyakka and Kamon, his former senior disciples, reappear in his life, often as rivals or antagonists with their own agendas. Their interactions reveal layers of history, rivalry, and unresolved conflict. Otoya, a young woman who works at a milk hall and provides Mao with information, becomes an ally. His master’s daughter, Yurako, remains a pivotal figure whose mysterious death continues to influence the present.

Throughout the series, Mao undergoes subtle but meaningful development. His centuries of solitude and burden begin to shift as he forms genuine connections with Nanoka and others. He confronts painful memories and learns to trust companions in his mission. His notable abilities include mastery of onmyodo, the practice of yin-yang divination and magic, which allows him to combat a wide range of supernatural threats. He wields the Hagunsei, a sword that is itself cursed; only Mao can handle it without meeting a terrible fate, though Nanoka proves to be an exception. His skills in exorcism, spiritual detection, and combat make him a formidable and resourceful protagonist in the dark fantasy and mystery-filled world of the anime.
