TV-Series
Description
Mao is a quarter-beast character possessing cat-like ears, reddish-brown hair, cream white skin, brown eyes, and a thin figure, standing 151cm tall. She is the illegitimate daughter of Rex Leonis Diocles, the beastman king of Bestia, and Ayane, a human dancer. Their forbidden relationship violated Bestia's laws against interracial interactions. To protect Diocles' honor, the pregnant Ayane escaped to Shildia with Volg's assistance, where Mao was born and raised.
In Shining Tears, Mao served as a trusted agent for the King of Balboa, delivering messages to Volg. She played a key role in securing the giants' aid for Weissritter by helping Xion rescue a young giant's father during a monster attack, demonstrating compassion for the child. This act influenced the giants to join the war effort. Mao subsequently joined Weissritter with Pios' approval.
Her story continues in Shining Wind and the anime Shining Tears X Wind. Tasked with locating her missing friend Zero, Mao crossed into the human world (Elde), encountering students Souma Akizuki and Touka Kureha. During a battle with a monster, an accident transported Souma and Kureha to End Earth, Mao's home world. She allied with them to confront threats across both worlds.
Mao became the leader of Weissritter during the conflict surrounding the legendary "Holy Grail" artifact. Her leadership involved coordinating efforts to prevent the awakening of Zeroboros, a guardian of time and space that would possess the war's victor and end the world.
Her relationship with Souma evolved from initial duty to deep mutual affection. After Souma overcame his feelings for Kureha, he recognized Mao's emotions upon seeing her tears and chose to remain in End Earth with her and Weissritter instead of returning home. This culminated in a Battle Couple dynamic where Souma wielded a Blaze Sword drawn from Mao's heart during combat.
Personality-wise, Mao balanced professionalism with underlying warmth, showing dedication to missions while forming genuine bonds. She disliked condescending gestures like head-pats due to her leadership role, though she tolerated them from close companions like Souma.
