Description
Serval emerges as a major character in the franchise's second season, journeying alongside Caracal and a human child named Kyururu. She first encounters Kyururu in the forest after he appears from a mysterious laboratory, playfully naming him based on the sound of his hungry stomach rumblings. While consistently cheerful and energetic, she experiences memory gaps concerning past adventures with another human companion, Kaban, recalling only faint impressions without full recollection.

Her personality remains upbeat, optimistic, and supportive throughout her travels. She demonstrates adaptability in challenging situations and a strong commitment to protecting her companions, showing initiative like swiftly eliminating an amorphous Cerulean threat to rescue Kyururu and Caracal. Her interactions often involve playful curiosity, marveling at unfamiliar structures such as windmills or enthusiastically participating in activities like repairing playground equipment with other Friends.

Serval maintains a close friendship with Caracal, characterized by lighthearted teasing balanced with mutual reliance. She extends her supportive nature to new Friends met on the journey, assisting Eastern Spot-Billed Duck in navigation, encouraging Kyururu to overcome fears like crossing gaps, and inviting Giant Panda to join group activities, focusing on companionship and encouragement.

Beyond the second season, Serval appears in most Kemono Friends projects as the mascot character, including the original 2015 mobile game, the 2017 anime's first season, manga adaptations like *Kemono Friends: Welcome to Japari Park!*, and stage plays. The prequel manga depicts her as an early resident of Japari Park following the "First Eruption," forming friendships with human caretaker Nana and park guide Mirai while maintaining a particularly close bond with Caracal. Her core design features distinctive long black-tipped ears, an M-shaped forehead marking, and spotted clothing patterns. Variant designs labeled EX1 through EX4 exist, with EX1 featuring darker spots, extended stripes, shorter hair with longer bangs, and outward-bowing ears revealing black-and-white patterns.

Her real-life animal basis, the serval (*Leptailurus serval*), is a small wild cat species native to sub-Saharan Africa. Key biological traits include specialized hunting of rodents using acute hearing, solitary territorial behavior marked by scent communication, and a conservation status classified as Least Concern by the IUCN despite threats like habitat loss. The franchise creator reportedly drew inspiration for the character after encountering a serval cat at Singapore Zoo.
