ONA
Description
Genunsai is the twin brother of the ninja Genryusai and the paternal grandfather of Kappei. He resides in the Iga region of the fictional land of Oedo. While he shares a strong physical resemblance to his twin, Genunsai can be distinguished by several key features. Notably, he has two prominent bottom teeth and does not wear a hat like his brother, allowing his much wilder hair to flow freely. This visual distinction mirrors their contrasting personalities, as Genunsai possesses a significantly more energetic, spirited, and untamed demeanor when compared to his more reserved and quiet twin.
Within the story, Genunsai serves as Kappei's strict but caring guardian and teacher, running a swordsmanship dojo where his grandson trains diligently. Although he initially appears to dislike ninjas and hides his own ninja heritage, this is a deliberate act. For generations, his family has been part of a ninja clan tasked with secretly protecting Gumchi, a mysterious, rubbery alien life form with incredible power, from those who wish to exploit it. Genunsai has kept the truth about ninjas hidden to safeguard Gumchi. However, after a ninja group attacks his dojo and Kappei awakens his own ninja power through Gumchi, it becomes clear that the secret can no longer be kept.
Motivated by the need to protect both his grandson and the powerful Gumchi from escalating threats, Genunsai makes a critical decision. He instructs Kappei to travel with Gumchi to find his twin brother, Genryusai, who lives in Komerika and is a member of the World Ninja Association. By sending Kappei to the WNA Academy under Genryusai's tutelage, Genunsai ensures his grandson receives proper ninja training and is placed in a safer environment. His concern for Kappei is further demonstrated during an incident where he temporarily disappears, prompting Kappei to launch a mission to find him.
Genunsai's most significant relationship is with his grandson Kappei, whom he trains in swordsmanship. His connection to his twin brother, Genryusai, is also central to his role, as the two represent opposite sides of a coin: Genryusai is a calm and legendary elder of the WNA, while Genunsai is the more energetic and wild-natured grandfather living a more traditional life in Oedo. As the story progresses, Genunsai moves from being a strict, secretive guardian to a figure who accepts the necessity of embracing the ninja world for the safety of his family. Regarding his abilities, as the master of a swordsmanship dojo and a descendant of a ninja clan, he is a highly skilled swordsman and a capable ninja, having protected the powerful Gumchi for generations. His primary weapon is the Drill Beast.
