Description
Kinako is a youkai resembling a small puppy, characterized by long white fur, a long tail, and distinctive purple eyes. Her appearance later shifts to include black ears reminiscent of another character following an unsuccessful transformation attempt. Exhibiting a cheerful yet occasionally stubborn personality, she forms an immediate bond with the fox youkai Yahiko. He names her after kinako mochi due to her visual similarity to the food, and their relationship evolves into a sibling-like dynamic observed by others as akin to an older brother and younger sister.
Kinako first appears concealed within a log in the human world, sustaining herself by eating leaves. Her initial encounter with Yahiko triggers extreme fear, causing her to faint under the mistaken belief he intends to eat her. Subsequently carried to Inogaratake Shrine, she engages in playful activities like tag with Yahiko. During this time, she expresses a desire to transform like him, but the attempt results in severe physical deterioration and brings her near fading.
Her critical condition prompts calls for assistance and efforts to stabilize her by providing leaves, which she identifies as her sustenance. When exorcism to the Underworld is proposed, Kinako resists, insisting she will only agree if Yahiko accompanies her, driven by her fear of loneliness. Yahiko declines due to prior obligations. Kinako eventually relents after Yahiko warns that her continued stubbornness risks damaging their relationship.
A temporary compromise allows Kinako additional playtime with Yahiko before her exorcism. The following day, after a final period of play, she willingly enters the Underworld. Her departure includes a promise to become stronger and master transformation. This narrative arc concludes with her transition to the Underworld.
