Description
Conan Edogawa is the central character in the anime special Magic File 4: Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey. In this story, he exists as the shrunken alias of the brilliant high school detective Shinichi Kudo, who was transformed into a child by a mysterious poison. His physical form is that of a young elementary school student, but his mind retains the full sharpness, memory, and deductive prowess of his teenage self.

In this particular adventure, Conan is visiting Osaka and staying overnight at the home of his friend and rival detective, Heiji Hattori. His personality remains consistent with his core characterization: he is highly intelligent, observant, and logical, though he often becomes impatient with the delays caused by the adults and situations around him. When interacting with others in his child form, he typically tries to maintain a facade of innocence, speaking in a more childish manner to avoid suspicion. However, his natural detective instincts frequently surface, especially when confronted with a mystery, causing him to reveal his advanced reasoning skills before he can catch himself.

Conan's primary motivation within this specific narrative is deceptively simple: he wants to eat the famous okonomiyaki of Osaka before he has to catch his train back to Tokyo. He is focused on this goal and becomes increasingly frustrated as a series of obstacles, including a talkative neighbor and a group of challenging high school students, threaten to derail his plans. This surface desire contrasts with his deeper, inherent drive to solve any puzzle or crime he encounters. When a woman asks him, Heiji, and Kazuha Toyama to watch her baby and then does not return, Conan’s need to uncover the truth immediately takes over. His role in the story is that of the primary detective who, alongside Heiji, pieces together the clues to resolve the situation. He is the one who, after Kazuha discovers the baby is actually a boy dressed as a girl, deduces that the woman likely did not abandon the child but that a kidnapping has occurred.

Key relationships in this story are prominently featured. His dynamic with Heiji Hattori is one of collaborative rivalry; they work together seamlessly, often completing each other's deductions, but also maintain a competitive edge in their detective work. Conan also interacts closely with Kazuha Toyama, who acts as a helpful and caring older sister figure. Although Ran Mouri does not appear prominently in the main action, she influences the plot's outcome. A development in the resolution occurs when Conan receives a call from Ran, informing him that they have to leave for Tokyo thirty minutes earlier than planned due to a scheduling mistake by Sonoko Suzuki. This forces the conclusion of his okonomiyaki quest to be left unresolved, as he must depart without having eaten the dish.

Despite the lighthearted premise, Conan's notable abilities are on full display throughout the special. He demonstrates his exceptional analytical skills and broad knowledge base when he and Heiji recognize the names "Hikaru" and "Kaoru" as a reference to characters from the classic Japanese literary work The Tale of Genji. This literary clue allows them to understand the misunderstanding between the parents and solve the case of the supposedly missing father. His capacity for keen observation and logical deduction, even in the midst of what began as a simple culinary outing, proves that his detective instincts are always active, regardless of the scale of the mystery.
