Description
Taira no Atsumori, a noble of the Heike clan, serves as the Ten no Genbu (Heavenly Genbu), one of eight celestial guardians, in a war-torn parallel world mirroring late Heian-period Kyoto where his clan battles the Genji. Discovered gravely wounded on the battlefield by Nozomi Kasuga, the Priestess of the White Dragon, her life-saving intervention becomes the catalyst for his betrayal of the Heike. He aligns with the Genji, driven by a personal vow to end the conflict and eradicate the vengeful onryō spirits unleashed by the Heike, whose presence disrupts the land's natural energies and weakens the White Dragon God.

This choice leaves him profoundly conflicted and emotionally scarred by his betrayal of family and former comrades. He internalizes this anguish, rarely voicing his sorrow or turmoil even as he fights against the Heike. His quiet, reserved demeanor fosters isolation within the Genji group; he endures the silent burden of guilt alone while pursuing his goal of peace.

Within the OVA adaptations, he participates in the ongoing conflict against supernatural foes alongside the Genji forces. The condensed OVA format presents his battles but offers less exploration of his internal struggles and development compared to the source material. A musical theme linked to him is performed alongside characters Hinoe and Musashibō Benkei in one OVA.

His role focuses on combating the Heike's onryō and supporting the Priestess's mission to restore balance. The emotional cost of his decisions remains a constant element of his portrayal, underscoring the personal sacrifice inherent in his quest to end the war.
