Description
Hideo Kosameda, captain of the Kosameda Bushi, projects an initial image of calm gentleness. He favors traditional hakama, wears his hair in a ponytail, and bears a distinguishing facial mole. This facade conceals his core arrogance, self-centeredness, and profound superiority complex. He demands absolute obedience, enforcing it through psychological manipulation and physical violence.

He systematically belittles and verbally abuses his subordinates to erode their confidence, fostering dependence on him for survival. He reinforces control with threats of expulsion from his castle or punishment inflicted upon family members, exploiting the desire to protect loved ones. He cultivates a cult of personality, positioning himself as the "father" of a "family" requiring total submission.

His sadism surfaces in acts of dominance, like the brutal, repeated kicking of Tsugumi Hattori after her defiance, an act that horrified witnesses. Conversely, he reacts with extreme distress to any perceived mistreatment directed at himself, such as Tsugumi spitting blood in his face. He views people as tools for his benefit, showing scant regard for their lives, even advocating using vulnerable citizens as cannon fodder against oni threats—a direct violation of Bushi principles.

Granted dominion over his castle and territory by the Tokugawa shogunate, this privilege massively inflated his ego, validating his belief in absolute rule. During the Kosameda Bushi Arc, he ordered Tsugumi to recruit strong Bushi, leading to the arrival of Musashi and Kojiro Kanemaki. Upon deducing their ignorance of Kitetsu blades, he dismissed them as useless, ordered their capture, and sought to confiscate their belongings.

Facing an imminent kodama oni attack, he declared total mobilization of the castle town, compelling non-combatants—women, children, the elderly—to fight. Tsugumi opposed this, citing the Bushi duty to protect people and arguing it brought shame. Hideo expelled her from the band and castle, threatening abandonment in the wilderness unless she submitted. When she stood her ground and townspeople hesitated to flee due to his threats against their families, Tsugumi challenged him directly.

Despite his combat prowess and reminding Tsugumi he taught her all she knew, she defeated him. His public humiliation occurred as Tsugumi captured him with her Twin Soaring Swallows weapon and slammed him to the ground. The subsequent destruction of his castle by kodama oni, combined with this profound defeat and betrayal, triggered a complete mental breakdown. He became despondent, fearful, and isolated, fixating on Tsugumi for help while losing all his former domineering drive, concluding his depicted story arc.
