Description
Hideo Kosameda is the captain of the Kosameda Bushi, a samurai band that governs a castle town in the world of Orient. He is an adult man with a distinctive appearance, often shown wearing traditional hakama and a ponytail, with a notable facial mole and green hair tied to ear length. Initially, he presents a calm and gentle demeanor, but this facade quickly gives way to his true nature as a cruel, arrogant, and deeply manipulative individual. His personality is defined by a profound superiority complex and a tyrannical need for absolute obedience from everyone under his command. He believes his word is law and becomes enraged by any form of dissent or questioning of his authority.

His primary motivation is the preservation of his own power and dominion over his castle and territory, which was granted to him by the Tokugawa shogunate. To maintain control, he systematically breaks down the will of his followers. He uses verbal abuse and psychological manipulation to erode their confidence, making them believe they are useless and cannot survive without him. He further reinforces this dependence by threatening expulsion from the castle or by punishing the families of those who disobey, exploiting their love for their relatives. He cultivates a toxic cult of personality around himself, acting as the "father" of a "family" that owes him total submission. This desire for control extends to his treatment of civilians, as he shows little regard for their lives and is willing to sacrifice non-combatants, including women, children, and the elderly, to fight oni if it serves his purpose, a direct violation of the Bushi code.

In the story, Hideo serves as the primary antagonist of the Kosameda Bushi arc. His role is defined by his oppressive rule over the people of his castle, particularly Tsugumi Hattori, whom he raised as an adoptive daughter. He uses her deep-seated fear of being abandoned as his most potent tool for control, keeping her subservient and dependent. His key relationship is with Tsugumi, whom he treats as a tool rather than a person. He manipulates her by alternating between performative affection and cold-hearted punishment, such as when he expelled her for defying him, only to offer to take it back if she obeyed. When the protagonists, Musashi and Kojiro, are brought to his castle, he quickly deems them useless and has them imprisoned, setting the stage for the conflict.

Hideo undergoes a significant development arc, though it is a negative one defined by his downfall. His domineering drive and sadistic confidence are shattered when he is publicly defeated by Tsugumi after she finally finds the courage to rebel against him. His loss is not just physical but psychological; after being slammed to the ground by her weapon and witnessing the subsequent destruction of his castle by a horde of Kodama oni, he suffers a complete mental breakdown. He becomes despondent, fearful, and isolated, losing all of his former arrogance and fixating on Tsugumi for help, a stark contrast to the cruel master he once was.

Regarding his notable abilities, Hideo is a skilled and experienced fighter, having personally trained Tsugumi in combat. He wields a Kitetsu, a demon blade, which in his case takes the form of a bow capable of firing powerful energy attacks. Despite his combat prowess, his ultimate weakness is his fragile ego, which crumbles upon facing genuine defiance and defeat.
