Description
Otto Suwen possesses gray hair framing his face and falling just below his chin, sharp blue eyes, and fair skin. His medium build stems from prior merchant work. He is considered somewhat handsome when serious, though frequent expressions of distress or panic diminish this. His attire features green clothing with gold accents, including a belted wardrobe, a dark green hood secured by a red bow, and a green ushanka hat bearing a white feather, lending a slight Arabian flair reflective of his hometown, Picoutatte.

Born twenty years before the main story as the second son of the Suwen Company heads, Otto bore the Divine Protection of Soul Language from birth. This ability allowed him to hear and communicate with nonhuman beings but initially drowned him in constant noise, screams, and death cries. Consequently, he grew up emotionless, unable to hear or understand his family. At age five, his older brother taught him to write using a notebook, enabling his first emotional connection: thanking his parents moved them to tears. By eight, he displayed academic talent but lagged socially, leading to isolation. At ten, fully recognizing his Divine Protection, its careless revelation by his younger brother earned Otto the town's ostracism and the derogatory nickname "Zodda bug bastard."

His life deteriorated when falsely accused of an affair with Diadora Regundra, a daughter of a powerful family. Using his ability, he discovered her relationships with eight other men and exposed them, prompting Diadora to hire an assassin. Otto was exiled from Picoutatte at sixteen. His father arranged an apprenticeship, and Otto became a traveling merchant. His ventures met relentless misfortune: bandit attacks, ruined goods, and disasters like his carriage being struck by lightning. Despite this, his mercantile talent prevented bankruptcy. Traveling, he rescued Marone Lisbon in Guineb after her betrayal by the mayor’s son, Ahim. Otto directed slave traders into a trap, engineering a carriage crash that freed Marone. He gave her his savings to start anew.

Otto encountered Natsuki Subaru and Emilia when Subaru sought transportation. Initially self-interested, Otto tried to abandon Subaru upon learning the White Whale pursued him. However, repeated interactions and shared dangers led him to join the Emilia Camp as its internal affairs officer. His loyalty solidified when he risked his life aiding Subaru during Sanctuary events, confronting threats like the distrusted Roswaal L. Mathers. He often acts as a pragmatic counterbalance to Subaru and Emilia’s idealism, willing to "play the villain" to prevent reckless actions. This role amplified his stress, particularly after the Battle for Priestella, culminating in an Arc 9 breakdown where he felt inadequate despite his efforts. Emilia’s encouragement helped him persevere.

Personality-wise, Otto is unlucky, sensitive, and prone to panic, yet fiercely loyal. He considers himself a pacifist, avoiding violence unless necessary to protect allies. His Divine Protection strategically gathers information from nonhuman sources to outmaneuver opponents. He suppresses his traumatic past but remains deeply affected by it, fueling his empathy and protective instincts toward the Emilia Camp, whom he views as family.
