Description
Laios Touden is a human adventurer, a "tall-man" with short blond hair, light gold eyes, and a muscular build. He keeps himself clean-shaven to avoid any resemblance to his estranged father. His adventuring gear includes silver plate armor, a maille skirt, silver bracers and knee guards, a white shirt, and brown boots.

Born in a northern village, Laios had a strained relationship with his parents, especially his father. He left home at twelve, aiming to build a better life for himself and his younger sister Falin, though they were separated for nine years. During this time, he worked as a mercenary and later deserted the army. He reunited with Falin when she was eighteen, and she joined his adventures. Laios bears deep guilt over leaving Falin behind and is fiercely committed to never abandoning her again. His nightmares often feature parental pressure to return home, marry, and have children, reflecting his aversion to traditional family roles.

Laios presents a calm and gentle exterior but becomes intensely animated when discussing monsters, speaking rapidly with exaggerated gestures. This passion began in childhood, when he frequently sketched monsters and studied their biology. Socially, he is blunt, struggles to recognize cues, and makes unintentionally offensive remarks, such as comparing Marcille to a mule or commenting on the benefits of Falin's dragon-related predicament. This causes others to find him unsettling, though he remains consistently friendly and accepting across races. Despite these challenges, he shows high intelligence in combat and monster ecology, quickly devising strategies based on biological observations. He is deeply loyal to his party, prioritizing their safety over treasure or personal gain.

His combat skills include proficient swordsmanship, basic magic, and encyclopedic monster knowledge used to innovate cooking and battle techniques. His sword, Kensuke, senses danger and manipulates objects. He also possesses a convincing dog imitation used to intimidate monsters. His artistic skill in drawing monsters, honed since childhood, is another noted ability.

Key relationships define him. His bond with Falin is central; he respects her independence but is fiercely protective, leading his party to rescue her after her dragon-related demise. With Marcille, mutual respect stems from their care for Falin, though his tactlessness strains their dynamic. He adapts to her discomfort with monster cuisine by making meals resemble surface-world foods. He respects Chilchuck professionally, acknowledging his lockpicking expertise and defending him against infantilization due to his half-foot stature. Senshi, a dwarf, becomes a role model due to his monster-cooking prowess, their partnership flourishing through culinary experimentation. Tensions arise with Shuro, who resents Laios' obliviousness to his romantic feelings for Falin and his reckless decisions.

Character development shows in his growing leadership and emotional awareness. Early failures, like his inability to protect Falin, haunt him, but he gradually learns to balance practicality with empathy. This is tested confronting Falin's chimera transformation; he initially moves to kill her to prevent harm but hesitates upon recognizing her humanity. Interactions with Kabru and Shuro force him to confront how others perceive his insensitivity, though his core eccentricities remain. His journey culminates in reconciling his love for monsters with ethical responsibilities after gaining dungeon-related powers.

Laios' fascination with monsters extends beyond academia; he admires their autonomy and power, contrasting them with human complexities he finds challenging. This led to speculation about neurodivergence, though the series creator stated his relatability was intended universally. His recurring nightmare involves transforming into a wolf or monster, symbolizing a desire to escape human societal pressures. Thematic elements around his name—derived from the Greek mythological figure Laius—hint at fears of perpetuating paternal failure and rejecting traditional life paths.
