Description
Shiori Misaka is a frail 16-year-old first-year high school student afflicted by an unspecified chronic illness since birth, resulting in severe physical weakness and repeated school absences. Her life-threatening condition carries a prognosis suggesting she may not survive past her next birthday. Despite this, she consistently presents a cheerful, polite exterior, downplaying her illness as a "common cold" to prevent burdening others. This optimism conceals profound inner turmoil, including past despair that manifested in suicidal tendencies and self-harm; she nearly acted on plans to slit her wrists with a box cutter just before her first encounter with Yuuichi Aizawa and Ayu Tsukimiya—an interaction that halted her suicide attempt through the sudden joy it provided.
Her family life is marked by tension with her older sister, Kaori Misaka, who emotionally distanced herself and renounced their sisterhood upon learning the severity of Shiori's prognosis, seeking to evade impending grief. Shiori harbors a deep yearning to reconcile and share mundane moments with Kaori, like attending school together or eating lunch side by side—experiences her illness stole from her. This estrangement intensifies Shiori's isolation, though she internalizes blame for Kaori's pain.
Shiori's growth centers on her bond with Yuuichi. They formally meet in Episode 2 when Ayu dislodges snow onto her. Shiori habitually waits in the school courtyard, first citing an unnamed acquaintance but later admitting she hoped to encounter Yuuichi. Their rapport evolves from playful exchanges—sharing ice cream (her favorite food) or discussing her dream to build an enormous snowman—to raw emotional vulnerability. At a park fountain, she confesses her deception about her illness's gravity and her prior suicide attempt. Yuuichi's unwavering support inspires her to reject resignation and embrace life.
A pivotal shift occurs when Shiori's doctor permits a one-week school attendance. Yuuichi coordinates a birthday party at a local café, inviting classmates and Kaori. Though Kaori initially avoids the event, her eventual arrival sparks reconciliation, fulfilling Shiori's deepest desire. Shortly after, Shiori collapses from deteriorating health and is hospitalized. Defying her prognosis in a miraculous recovery, she survives and tearfully thanks Yuuichi, admitting she never truly wished to die and regrets suppressing her emotions to feign strength.
Shiori's design reflects her fragility: 157 cm tall with a slender 43 kg frame, blue eyes, and short brown hair. She typically dons a woolen white jumper, brown checkered shawl, and knee-high socks. Her theme song, "Egao no Mukōgawa ni" ("Another Side of a Smiling Face"), echoes her concealed struggles. Trivia notes her dislike for spicy food (contrasting Yuuichi's Tabasco preference), her cameo walking with her mother in the first episode of the 2006 adaptation, and the meaning of her name ("bookmark").
