Description
Sha Gojyo is a hanyou, born of a human mother and a water demon father, a taboo heritage that subjected him to discrimination and abuse. Following his biological parents' suicide, he endured severe physical and emotional torment from his father's youkai wife, resentful over her husband's infidelity. This culminated at age twelve when his stepmother attacked him with an axe, leaving two permanent scars on his left cheek. His half-brother, Sha Jien, intervened by killing their mother to save Gojyo but then abandoned him, consumed by guilt. Left alone, Gojyo survived on the streets through theft, gambling, and transient relationships.

During adolescence, a youkai named Banri mentored Gojyo in street skills, though Banri often vanished due to personal troubles. As an adult, Gojyo lived a solitary life of gambling and drinking until discovering the gravely injured Cho Gonou (later Cho Hakkai) lying in a rain-soaked road. Gojyo nursed him back to health, forging a deep bond unaware of Gonou's past. This ended when Genjo Sanzo arrived to arrest Gonou for massacring a thousand demons. After Gonou fled and gouged out his own right eye in atonement, Sanzo's intervention led to his rebirth as Hakkai. Gojyo reunited with Hakkai days later, solidifying their lifelong friendship and eventual alliance with Sanzo and Son Goku.

Physically, Gojyo stands 6'1" with a lean, muscular build, crimson hair and eyes marking his heritage, and prominent facial scars. His primary weapon is a shakujō, a staff with a crescent-moon blade and chain acquired by breaking its sealed container. The weapon extends via a concealed chain for ranged combat and regenerates if damaged. As a half-demon without power limiters, he possesses enhanced strength and resilience.

Personality-wise, Gojyo employs humor, flirtation, and sarcasm as defenses against his traumatic past. He frequently bickers with Son Goku, teasing him as "stupid monkey," reflecting a brotherly bond. Despite a womanizing persona and habits like chain-smoking, he exhibits deep empathy, particularly for abused children or outcasts, often risking his life to protect them. He masks vulnerability with bravado but shows unwavering loyalty to his companions, especially Hakkai. His street smarts and observational skills make him a pragmatic counterbalance, though he avoids confrontation with Hakkai's rare anger or Sanzo's authority.

Throughout the journey west, Gojyo confronts residual trauma, including reunions with his half-brother Dokugakuji (formerly Jien), who serves their enemy Kougaiji. These encounters force him to reconcile his past while reaffirming his chosen family. His role extends beyond combat; he provides emotional stability during crises like Goku's berserk episodes or Hakkai's struggles with his demonic nature. His development shows a shift from self-preservation to selfless dedication, though his core traits—protectiveness, humor, and resilience—remain consistent anchors.
