Description
Maō is the supreme leader and commander of the Jural aliens, the extraterrestrial invaders who target Earth in their quest for a new home after their own planet, Jural, began to perish. Unlike his subordinates, who share a uniform red appearance, Maō possesses a distinct blue-based color scheme, two normal eyes, a long sharp nose, and a red marking on his forehead that sometimes suggests a third eye. His physical design sets him apart from the rest of the Jural forces, marking him as the central authority figure. His direct motivation is to conquer Earth and claim its resources to save his dying race, making him a driven and determined antagonist. In terms of personality, Maō displays a mix of contradictory traits. He is ruthless and unforgiving toward traitors and often devises cruel, large-scale schemes such as the Mad Green operation. However, he also shows a surprisingly caring side toward his own soldiers, once prioritising their evacuation during a crisis and dismissing minor failures with a casual attitude. This unusual combination of cruelty and paternal concern makes him a memorable figure. His role in the story is that of the primary antagonist who orchestrates the alien invasion, delegating various plots to his forces while occasionally taking direct action himself. He has a notable dynamic with the protagonist Ken Izumi, referred to as Chargeman Ken; the two are bitter enemies, yet on rare occasions they have cooperated to prevent Earth's destruction when it would also threaten the Jural cause. This reluctant alliance highlights a pragmatic, if inconsistent, side to his character. Throughout the series, Maō does not undergo significant development or change; he remains consistently ambitious and unconventional in his methods, often displaying a comedic obliviousness to the absurdity of his schemes. He possesses several notable abilities, including the power to disguise himself as a human, such as taking the form of a young girl named Hitomi to infiltrate Ken's circle. He can also fire beams from his eyes, use a variety of advanced scientific weapons, and in certain adaptations, stretch his limbs or secrete dissolving liquids from his mouth. Despite these powers, he frequently fails to defeat Ken and is often undone by his own overcomplicated plans or by Ken's direct intervention.
