Description
Makoto Shiina attends Wakaba Academy as a classmate of Kōsaku Sakamoto and Hibari Ōzora. An active member of the school's boxing club, he frequently showcases his skills, using sparring sessions to antagonize Kōsaku during their initial encounters.

Shiina possesses black eyes and black hair styled in a prominent curly pompadour framing his face, typically wearing a boxing jersey. His personality blends a self-assured, cool-guy demeanor with persistent determination, especially in his unwavering romantic pursuit of Hibari, whom he is determined to make his girlfriend despite her clear disinterest and repeated rejections.

His animosity toward Kōsaku stems from Kōsaku's perceived closeness to Hibari, sparking early physical confrontations. Shiina provokes and punches Kōsaku soon after his arrival, only to be swiftly countered by Hibari. This rivalry carries into the boxing club, where Shiina initially bullies Kōsaku, viewing him as both a romantic competitor and an obstacle.

His fixation on Hibari creates a complex dynamic within the boxing club. Club manager Rie Kawai harbors strong feelings for Shiina, but he consistently disregards her affections, focusing solely on Hibari. This leads him to dismissively reject or manipulate Rie, sometimes treating her abusively. During a boxing club training camp, Shiina attempts to kiss Hibari in a darkened train tunnel; the plan backfires, resulting in him being physically subdued by her. Later, he openly declares his exclusive interest in Hibari, further distressing Rie.

Over time, Shiina's relationship with Kōsaku shifts from hostility toward an uneasy tolerance. Following intense physical clashes and confrontations, the two develop a grudging mutual respect, acknowledging each other's presence despite the persistence of their rivalry. This shift is partly driven by Kōsaku's reassurances that no romantic involvement exists between him and Hibari, though Shiina remains vigilant and reactive to any perceived closeness between them.

Throughout the series, Shiina's primary motivation remains his unreciprocated fixation on Hibari. He continues to voice his romantic intentions toward her publicly, fueling ongoing tensions and comedic conflicts within the school and club settings.
