Description
Sori is a retired swordsman, formerly a skilled kenshi, who abandoned that life to become a painter. He lives modestly as an artist, constantly moving residences throughout Edo with his daughter Tatsubo due to evictions caused by his messy painting methods. These include "swordpainting" – attaching brushes to blades – and using blood as pigment, which he calls "Primal Red." They rent out rooms periodically for income.

He shares a significant history as the closest friend of Rin Asano's father. Following the Mutenichi-ryu dojo massacre and the deaths of Rin's parents, Sori acts as her protector, offering shelter and financial support. He notably provided thirty ryo to fund Rin's quest for vengeance against the Ittō-ryū. Despite Rin's attempts to recruit him as a swordsman, he declines, emphasizing his commitment to art over violence and expressing regret for his bloodstained past. His relationship with Tatsubo involves mutual care, though she often expresses frustration over his domestic neglect due to artistic absorption, especially after her unannounced return from leaving her husband.

Sori occasionally intervenes in conflicts, demonstrating retained combat prowess. He encountered and aided a severely injured Manji alongside Hyakurin and Shinriji, later sheltering them. During Manji's recovery, Sori revealed critical information: the Mugai-ryū is a shogunate-backed group composed of death row convicts tasked with eliminating the Ittō-ryū. He also disclosed Hyakurin's backstory as a convict sentenced for killing her abusive husband. Sori provided Manji with essential travel documents (tegata), which Manji had previously obtained illegitimately.

His personality blends approachability with thoughtfulness, often aiding others despite his retired status. He exhibits eccentric artistic passion, such as requesting Shinriji's blood for painting and admiring Magatsu Taito's hairstyle enough to sketch it. However, he displays fierce protectiveness over his art, violently expelling anyone disrespecting it. Though no longer identifying as a fighter, his skill remains formidable, evidenced by effortlessly defeating Ittō-ryū member Magatsu while defending Rin.
