Description
Shotaro Hidari operates as a private detective from the Narumi Detective Office in Futo City. Orphaned in childhood, he moved to Futo under his aunt's care. Witnessing Sokichi Narumi rescue Melissa from the Spider Dopant during an elementary school field trip ignited his passion for detective work. Sokichi initially rejected him, grieving Matsu's death, but Shotaro persisted. He earned apprenticeship by protecting a bullied student without retaliation.
On "Begins Night," Sokichi accepted Shroud's mission to rescue Philip from the Museum organization. Shotaro accompanied him but disobeyed orders during the operation, inadvertently leading to Sokichi dying from Masquerade Dopant gunfire. With his final breath, Sokichi entrusted Shotaro with his fedora and legacy. This event forged Shotaro's partnership with Philip; together they used the Double Driver to become Kamen Rider W for the first time to escape.
As one half of Kamen Rider W, Shotaro provides the physical host body, merging consciousness with Philip through the Double Driver. His Gaia Memories form the left side of combined forms like CycloneJoker and FangJoker. Initially unsuited for Gaia Memory usage, causing instability, his strong synchronization with the Joker Memory later stabilized powerful forms like FangJoker and enabled the CycloneJokerXtreme super mode. Separated from Philip, he transforms solo into Kamen Rider Joker using a Lost Driver—first with the T2 Joker Memory, later with the original after the T2's destruction. This solo form emphasizes hand-to-hand combat, employing Rider Punch or Rider Kick Maximum Drives.
Shotaro aspires to be a "hard-boiled" detective like Sokichi, quoting Raymond Chandler and wearing retro 1930s-style attire with Sokichi's fedora. His emotional nature and idealism, however, earn him the nickname "half-boiled." He exhibits intense empathy for clients and fierce protectiveness toward Futo City, declaring enemies of anyone who "makes the city cry." This compassion manifests as recklessness—enduring Weather Dopant attacks to save a child or deploying Twin Maximum finishers despite physical risks. Key relationships include a brotherly bond with Philip, involving mutual protection; a mentor-student dynamic with Sokichi, whose death haunted Shotaro until he overcame his guilt; and a familial rapport with Sokichi's daughter Akiko Narumi, whom he later escorted at her wedding.
Two years after the original series, Shotaro continues investigating Dopant cases in Fuuto PI. He hires Tokime, an amnesiac targeted by new enemies called High Dopes, and unravels her connection to the Aurora Dopant and Foundation X. This era further explores his backstory, including childhood encounters with Sokichi and his evolution from delinquent to detective. His combat adapts to new challenges, utilizing forms like FangTrigger and FangMetal.
