Description
Dominique de Sade, often called Domi, is a vampire of the Crimson Moon and a major character from the House de Sade, one of the most influential noble families in vampire society. She is the youngest daughter of the family and serves as a knight for Carbunculus Castle, a role that requires significant combat skill and dedication.
Dominique’s background is deeply marked by a tragic family secret. Born as a twin alongside her brother Louis, she was raised to believe Louis was simply a year older than her. In reality, the birth of twins is considered an ill omen in vampire society, leading their parents to arbitrarily choose Dominique to be the one who would live a normal life, while Louis was designated for death. Their grandfather rescued Louis, raising him in seclusion in the village of Averoigne, and Dominique only visited him occasionally. It was during these visits that she met and befriended Noé Archiviste, an orphan who had become their grandfather’s student. The three formed a deep friendship, with Dominique developing romantic feelings for Noé.
The tragedy that defines Dominique’s life occurred when a childhood friend became a curse-bearer. In an attempt to save the friend, Louis was corrupted and had to be decapitated. On his deathbed, he gave Dominique a box to deliver to Noé. The box contained wooden stakes, and its contents horrified Noé so deeply that he fell into a fever. Shortly after, Dominique’s older sister Veronica revealed the truth about their twin birth, exposing that their family had deemed one of them worthless. The final blow came when a delirious Noé, in his fever, mistook Dominique for Louis, saying his name. Convinced that everyone, especially Noé, would have preferred Louis to live, Dominique suffered a profound identity crisis. She cut her hair, adopted her brother’s masculine style of dress and speech patterns, and took it upon herself to act as Noé’s protector—trying, in essence, to become Louis.
Dominique projects a confident, flirtatious, and often brash personality. She introduces herself as Noé’s fiancée, though he denies it, and she is not afraid to threaten or intimidate those she perceives as threats to the people she cares about. She is immediately hostile toward Vanitas, whom she sees as a dangerous and corrupting influence on Noé. However, this assertive exterior masks a deeply insecure and self-loathing individual. Her inner thoughts are filled with self-degradation, and she constantly questions her own worth, driven by immense survivor’s guilt. This internal pain reaches a breaking point, leading to a suicide attempt at an amusement park, from which she is saved by Jeanne, the Hellfire Witch.
Dominique’s key relationships drive much of her story. Her bond with Noé Archiviste is the most central; she is fiercely protective of him, though he remains oblivious to her romantic feelings, which she struggles to express genuinely. Her initial distrust of Vanitas slowly evolves into a more complex, if still wary, tolerance. Her relationship with Jeanne is particularly layered, marked by a mix of admiration, jealousy, and eventual solidarity. She is jealous of Jeanne’s strength and her perceived ability to protect Noé better than she can, but she also genuinely likes her and later gives her advice on matters of the heart, showing a capacity for growth and connection.
In terms of abilities, as a vampire, Dominique possesses the standard enhancements of superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. Her primary weapon is a rapier, which she wields with great precision and skill as a trained knight. She is also proficient in knife throwing. More distinctively, she can use the de Sade family’s signature power of cryokinesis. By rewriting the World Formula, she can create and manipulate ice, summoning shards and waves to restrain or attack opponents. Unlike her more destructive siblings, she uses her ice powers with restraint, often for defense or containment. Her ice constructs are exceptionally strong, capable of holding up a collapsing ferris wheel.
